He played a central role in the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. Vladimir Lenin described him as a "most valuable and major theorist" of the Communist Party. Bukharin was deeply involved in the Soviet government from 1917 until 1937. His work focused on economics and the social structures of the new Soviet state. He helped shape the political and economic foundations of the early Soviet Union.

Bukharin's early political life began during the Russian Revolution of 1905. He studied economics at Moscow Imperial University and joined the Bolsheviks in 1906.

In 1910, the Tsarist secret police, known as the Okhrana, arrested him. He was sent into internal exile in Onega, located in the Arkhangelsk region. However, he escaped abroad in 1911 and traveled to Germany and Poland. During this time, he met Vladimir Lenin and established his reputation as a theorist. His book, *Imperialism and the World Economy*, received an endorsement from Lenin.

After the February Revolution of 1917, Bukharin returned to Russia to join the growing Bolshevik movement. The Bolshevik membership grew from 24,000 in February 1917 to 200,000 by October 1917. Bukharin became a leading figure in the Moscow branch of the party. Following the October Revolution, he served as the editor of the party newspaper, *Pravda*. He also drafted and defended revolutionary decrees for the Moscow Soviet. His leadership helped establish the party's influence in the central provinces of Russia.

During the period of the Russian Civil War, Bukharin engaged in intense theoretical debates. He initially supported a policy known as war communism. However, he later became a chief advocate for the New Economic Policy, or NEP. The NEP was a system introduced in 1921 to strengthen the Soviet state. It allowed for some private ownership and capitalistic practices in agriculture and retail. This policy helped the economy recover after the war. Bukharin's support for the NEP positioned him as a key political player.

In the mid-1920s, Bukharin entered a period of significant political influence. He became a full member of the Politburo after Lenin's death in 1924.

He allied himself with Joseph Stalin during the power struggles following Lenin's passing. Bukharin formulated the theory of "socialism in one country." This theory argued that socialism could be built within Russia alone. It did not require simultaneous revolutions in other countries to succeed. This idea became a fundamental part of Stalinist doctrine.

Political shifts eventually led to Bukharin's decline in power. In 1929, Stalin decided to proceed with agricultural collectivisation during the "Great Break." Bukharin opposed this direction and was labeled the leader of the "Right Opposition."

As a result, he was removed from his leadership roles and the Comintern. The Comintern is the Communist International, an organization that coordinated global communist parties. Although he was reelected to the Central Committee in 1934, his influence had faded. He served as the editor of the newspaper *Izvestia* during this time.

The final stage of Bukharin's life occurred during the Great Purge. In February 1937, the government accused him of treason.

He was subjected to a show trial, which is a legal proceeding intended to demonstrate political points. Following the trial, Bukharin was executed on 15 March 1938. His life remains a significant study of the complexities of early Soviet politics. His transition from a top theorist to a political outcast reflects the changing nature of the Soviet state.
