History in this region goes back a very long time. The Nok culture lived there around 1500 BC. They made beautiful figures out of clay called terracotta. They also worked with iron a long time ago. Other great kingdoms lived here too. The Edo Kingdom of Benin was in the south. The Oyo Empire was in the southwest. The Hausa Kingdoms were in the north. The Igbo Kingdom of Nri was in the southeast.

Modern Nigeria began to take its shape in the 19th century. During this time, Britain began to rule the area. They joined the Northern and Southern protectorates together in 1914.

Lagos is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. Because of its massive population and large economy, many citizens call Nigeria the "Giant of Africa."

The name Nigeria comes from the Niger River.

A British journalist named Flora Shaw coined the name in 1897. Before this, people suggested many other names. These included the Niger Empire or the Hausa Territories. The name Niger itself likely comes from a Tuareg phrase. This phrase means "river of rivers." This river is a central feature of the landscape. It helps define the geography of the entire region.

Nigeria has a very deep history of civilization. The Nok culture thrived between 1500 BC and 200 AD.

They are known for making life-sized terracotta figures. These are some of the earliest known sculptures in Africa. The Nok people also practiced iron smelting. Research shows they may have developed ironworking independently. Evidence of early ironworking also exists in the Nsukka region. This shows that metallurgy was established very early in the area.

Many powerful kingdoms existed before the modern era. In the north, the Hausa Kingdoms had a long history. The Kano Chronicle records their existence around 999 AD. In the south, the Edo Kingdom of Benin was powerful for centuries. The Igbo Kingdom of Nri also held influence in the southeast. The Oyo Empire was a major force in the southwest. These states had different cultures and political systems. They were often connected through trade and complex social structures.

European contact changed the region significantly during the 16th century. Portuguese explorers began trading at ports like Lagos and Calabar. This period included the Atlantic slave trade. Many people were captured in raids and wars. They were taken to coastal ports to be moved across the ocean. Later, the British began to take control of the area. They merged the Southern and Northern Nigeria Protectorates in 1914.
