He is often called the founder of modern sculpture. This is because he changed how people made art in Italy. He did not just copy old styles. Instead, he mixed different ways of making things. He combined the French Gothic style with the classical style of ancient Rome. This helped his art show more movement and emotion. His work paved the way for the Italian Renaissance later on.

Nicola learned to carve by studying very old things. He looked at Roman sculptures and stone coffins called sarcophagi.

These old works gave him many great ideas. He studied how Roman artists made figures look strong. He also learned from the way they used light and shadow. By studying these old pieces, he learned to make his own stone figures look more alive. He wanted his art to feel real to the people who saw it.

One of his greatest works is the pulpit in the Pisa Baptistery.

Nicola worked on many important projects across Italy. Around 1245, he moved to Tuscany to work at Prato Castle. He later moved to Lucca to work on the Cathedral of Saint Martin. In 1265, he began a very large pulpit for the Siena Cathedral. He worked on this with his son, Giovanni Pisano. He also helped with the dome of the Pisa Baptistery. These jobs showed how famous he had become as an artist.

Nicola often worked with other talented people. His son Giovanni was a very important helper on many jobs. He also worked with assistants like Arnolfo di Cambio and Lapo di Ricevuto. One of his last big jobs was the Fontana Maggiore in Perugia. This is a great fountain with many beautiful details. Even though he used old styles, his art was very original. He is often recognized as the founder of modern sculpture. This title comes from his ability to transform how artists approached their craft. He did not simply copy the art of the past. Instead, he created a new way of working by blending different traditions. He combined the French Gothic style with the classical style of ancient Rome. This unique mixture helped his sculptures express much more movement and emotion than previous works.

To achieve this new style, Pisano engaged in deep study of ancient remains. He spent much of his time observing Roman sculptures from the Augustan era.

He was particularly inspired by stone coffins known as sarcophagi. He studied pieces like the Phaedra sarcophagus found in the Camposanto in Pisa. These ancient works taught him how to represent the human form with strength. By analyzing these prototypes, he learned to reintegrate classical beauty into Christian art.

One of his most significant masterworks is the pulpit in the Pisa Baptistery.

He completed this massive project around the year 1260 and signed it "Nicola Pisanus." The structure is built upon seven columns. A central raised column is supported by telamons, which are male figures used as architectural supports, and various animals. Three of the external columns rest on realistically carved lions.

The pulpit is made of white Carrara marble and features five large reliefs. These reliefs depict scenes from the Life of Christ, such as the Nativity and the Crucifixion. To make these religious scenes feel more real, the eyes of the figures were originally colored.

Pisano's career took him across many important Italian cities. Around 1245, he moved to Tuscany to work at the Prato Castle. He later worked on the façade of the Cathedral of Saint Martin in Lucca. Between 1245 and 1250, he lived in Pisa, where his son Giovanni Pisano was born. He also worked on the dome of the Pisa Baptistery between 1260 and 1264. During this time, he increased the height of the dome using a system of two domes. This work showed his skill in both sculpture and architectural design.

As his fame grew, Pisano received even more ambitious commissions. In 1265, he began working on a marble pulpit for the Siena Cathedral. This project was larger than his Pisa pulpit and is considered his masterpiece. It focused on the important religious doctrines of Salvation and the Last Judgment. He worked on this piece with his son and several skilled assistants. Because of his reputation, he was chosen specifically for such a high-profile task. This pulpit remains one of the earliest surviving works in the Siena Cathedral.

Nicola rarely worked alone and often led a team of talented artists. His son, Giovanni Pisano, was a frequent collaborator on many major projects. He also worked with assistants such as Arnolfo di Cambio and Lapo di Ricevuto. These assistants helped complete large-scale works like the Siena pulpit. In his later years, he contributed to the Fontana Maggiore in Perugia. This great fountain features three basins and many detailed relief panels. While Giovanni and other assistants did much of the sculpting, the fountain shows Nicola's delicate hand.

Nicola Pisano's legacy is defined by his role as a bridge between eras. His work served as a crucial precursor to Italian Renaissance sculpture. In fact, many historians begin studying Renaissance art from the year 1260. This date marks the completion of his famous Pisa pulpit. While he stayed attached to some Gothic elements, he pushed Tuscan sculpture toward a new direction. He successfully integrated the features of Roman antiquity with the styles of Northern Europe. His ability to synthesize these worlds changed the course of art history.
