His philosophical work is centered on a concept called "learned ignorance." This idea is found in his treatise, *De Docta Ignorantia*. He argued that the finite human mind cannot fully understand the infinite mind of God. He called this infinite being "the Maximum." Even though we cannot know everything, he believed we can grow by recognizing our own limitations. This process of knowing what we do not know is what he called "learned ignorance." He also used the idea of "conjectures" to help people reach a better understanding of truth.
In the field of science, Nicholas held views that were very advanced. He believed the Earth was a star like any other star in the sky. He argued that the Earth was not the center of the universe. He also suggested that the Earth was not at rest. He believed the celestial bodies were not perfectly spherical and their orbits were not circular. During his "Great Legation," he traveled almost 3,000 miles to preach and reform. He was known as the "Hercules of the Eugenian cause" for his work. In politics, he proposed a specific method for electing Holy Roman Emperors. This method was very similar to the Borda count used in modern elections. His mathematical approach to voting preceded the actual Borda count by over 300 years.
Nicholas faced many challenges during his career. He was involved in power struggles between Rome and the German states. In 1460, Duke Sigismund of Austria imprisoned him. This led Pope Pius II to excommunicate the Duke. Nicholas eventually returned to Rome but could not return to his bishopric. He died in Todi, Italy, on 11 August 1464. His body was buried in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome.
