The second theory focuses on the accretion disk. An accretion disk is a structure of material swirling around the black hole. The energy released by material flowing into the black hole can create a vigorous outflow of gas from the disk's surface. This outflow directly heats the surrounding gas to extremely high temperatures. These high temperatures cause the gas to emit X-rays. Astronomers using the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton satellite have observed a specific X-ray signal. When the X-ray source flares, the accretion disk reflects that emission about half an hour later.

History shows how our view of NGC 4151 has changed over time. William Herschel first mentioned the galaxy on March 17, 1787. It later became one of six galaxies described in a paper that defined the term "Seyfert galaxy." X-ray detection began on December 24, 1970, using the Uhuru satellite. However, there was some controversy regarding that detection. The Uhuru observation spanned a large error-box of 0.56 square degrees. Some believe it might have detected a different object called 1E 1207.9 +3945 instead. Later, the HEAO 1 satellite detected an X-ray source at 1H 1210+393. This position matched the optical nucleus and was outside the original Uhuru error box.

NGC 4151 is also a place where massive stellar events occur. On April 1, 2018, the Lick Observatory Supernova Search (LOSS) discovered a supernova named SN 2018aoq. This was a Type II-P supernova with a magnitude of 15.3. Such events show the dynamic nature of the stars within the galaxy. Beyond its own structure, NGC 4151 is part of a larger cosmic neighborhood. It is a member of the NGC 4151 Group, which contains nine galaxies.
