Long before any settlers arrived, Aboriginal people lived in this land. They arrived in Australia about 40,000 to 60,000 years ago. An estimated 250,000 Aboriginal people lived in the region before European settlement.
The first settlement was a penal colony. This was a place where convicts lived and worked. At first, they were only supposed to farm for food. Trade and shipbuilding were even banned to keep them isolated. However, things changed after Arthur Phillip left as governor. Military officers began to buy land and trade goods. Farms grew around places like Parramatta, Windsor, and Camden. By 1803, the colony could grow enough grain for itself.
As time passed, the colony grew and changed. In 1815, a road was finished across the Blue Mountains.

New South Wales, often called NSW, is a major state on Australia's east coast.

Long before European arrival, Aboriginal people inhabited this region. They arrived in Australia between 40,000 and 60,000 years ago. Before settlement, an estimated 250,000 Aboriginal people lived here. In 1770, James Cook charted the eastern coast of the continent. He claimed the coastline for Britain. Cook originally named the land New Wales. He later changed the name to New South Wales.
The colony began as a British penal colony. A penal colony is a place used to hold and punish criminals. Initially, the colony focused on subsistence agriculture to feed itself. The British banned trade and shipbuilding to keep convicts isolated. However, these rules changed after Phillip left as governor. Military officers began acquiring land and importing goods from visiting ships. Former convicts also started farming and trading. By 1803, the colony had become self-sufficient in grain.
Growth continued as the colony expanded into new territories. In 1815, a road was completed across the Blue Mountains.

New discoveries changed the economy during the mid-1800s. Coal was found early in the settlement period. In 1851, gold was discovered in the region.
New South Wales was vital to the creation of the Australian nation. Federation is the process where separate colonies join to form one country. Henry Parkes was a key leader who advocated for federation.
Since federation, the state has seen many social and political changes. Women won the right to vote in NSW in 1902. However, they could not stand for parliament until 1918. The state's economy has also become more diverse over time. It moved from simple farming to include more manufacturing. Today, New South Wales remains a central part of Australia's identity. It features iconic landmarks like the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It continues to be a place of significant history and growth.
