Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s from what is now Mexico. They named the area Nuevo México.

They built Santa Fe in 1610. It is the oldest state capital in the United States.

After a war with Mexico, the United States took control of the land. New Mexico finally became the 47th state in 1912. Today, the state has a very diverse culture. It has many Hispanic and Latino Americans. It also has the second-highest percentage of Native Americans in the country.

New Mexico is a place where many cultures meet. You can see this in the food and the music. The architecture often uses a style called Pueblo Revival.

The state is also a center for science and learning. It is home to places like Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Today, New Mexico is one of only seven majority-minority states. This means no single ethnic group makes up most of the population. It has the highest percentage of Hispanic and Latino Americans in the nation. It also has the second-highest percentage of Native Americans, following Alaska.

The state is home to one-third of the Navajo Nation. It also includes 19 federally recognized Pueblo communities. This mix of cultures influences the food, music, and architecture of the state.

Los Alamos County is even noted as one of the most educated counties in the U.S.

There is also a significant federal presence in the state. New Mexico hosts U.S. military installations like White Sands Missile Range. It also contains Department of Energy research centers. These include the Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories. The state was even the site of the first nuclear test, named Trinity. These facilities connect the state's history to modern scientific discovery.
