Nefertiti held many important titles. One title was "Lady of All Women." She was also called "Mistress of Upper and Lower Egypt." Her name likely meant "the beautiful one has come." She and Akhenaten had at least six daughters. These included Meritaten and Meketaten. One daughter, Ankhesenpaaten, later married King Tutankhamun. Some people once thought Nefertiti was Tutankhamun's mother. However, studies of mummies suggest this is not true.

Nefertiti was a very visible leader. In many carvings, she appears just as often as her husband. She is shown doing things usually only kings did. For example, art shows her smiting enemies to protect the land.

In the fourth year of Akhenaten's reign, they moved the capital. They moved to a new city called Akhetaten. This city is known today as Amarna. The royal family lived in the Great Royal Palace there. An official named Meryre II helped run her household.

Some scholars believe Nefertiti became a pharaoh herself. This might have happened after Akhenaten died. She may have used the throne name Neferneferuaten. If she ruled, she might have helped Tutankhamun. She may have helped move the capital back to Memphis. This would have helped bring back the old religion. There is still a lot of debate about this part of her life. Her name disappears from records after a certain time. We do not know for sure if she died or just stopped ruling.

In the 20th century, a famous treasure was found.

She served as the great royal wife to Pharaoh Akhenaten. Together, the royal couple led a radical overhaul of state religious policy. They promoted a religion called Atenism, which focused on the sun disc known as the Aten. This system was potentially monotheistic, meaning it centered on one god. It also emphasized a direct connection between the Aten and the royal household. This period was one of the wealthiest eras in ancient Egyptian history.

Nefertiti held many prestigious titles that showed her high status. Her name likely meant "the beautiful one has come." Some of her titles included "Lady of All Women" and "Mistress of Upper and Lower Egypt." She was also called "Great of Praises" and "Lady of Grace." These titles helped define her role within the complex Egyptian social hierarchy. Her political importance is clear from how often she appears in historical records. In the first five years of Akhenaten's reign, she was depicted nearly twice as often as her husband.

While much of her early life is unknown, scholars have several theories about her family. Some believe she was the daughter of an influential man named Ay. Ay held the title "God's Father," which may indicate he was the father of a pharaoh's wife. Others have suggested she might have been Akhenaten's full sister. However, her titles do not include "King's Daughter" or "King's Sister," which makes that theory less likely. There was even a theory that she was a foreign princess named Tadukhipa. Most experts view these ideas as speculation because no direct evidence exists to confirm them.

Nefertiti and Akhenaten had at least six daughters. These included Meritaten, Meketaten, and Ankhesenpaaten. Ankhesenpaaten later became known as Ankhesenamun after she married King Tutankhamun. Although some people once thought Nefertiti was the mother of Tutankhamun, genetic studies of mummies suggest this was not the case. The royal family lived in a new capital city called Akhetaten, or modern Amarna. They resided in the Great Royal Palace in the center of this city. An official named Meryre II served as her steward and managed her household.

Nefertiti's role was much more active than a typical queen's role. She was often shown in scenes that were usually reserved for kings. For example, she is depicted "smiting the enemy" to protect Egypt.

She is also shown riding in a chariot and worshipping the Aten with royal authority. In the fourth year of Akhenaten's reign, the capital moved to Akhetaten. By his fifth year, Akhenaten changed his name to reflect the importance of the Aten. Nefertiti's name also changed to Neferneferuaten-Nefertiti during this time. This shift marked a move toward monolatry, where one god is worshipped as the primary object of devotion.

There is a great debate among historians regarding Nefertiti's later years. Some scholars believe she was promoted to a co-regent. This means she would have ruled alongside her husband with shared power. After Akhenaten died in his 17th year of reign, some think she ruled as a female pharaoh. She may have used the throne name Neferneferuaten. If she did rule, she might have worked to restore the traditional Egyptian religion. She may have also helped transition power to the young Tutankhamun.

Nefertiti became a global icon due to a famous archaeological discovery. In the 20th century, her limestone bust was found in the studio of the sculptor Thutmose.
