Sailors used tools to find where they were. They used tools to measure how high stars were in the sky. This helped them find their path.

Today, we use new tools to find our way. We use machines that talk to satellites in space. These tools show us our exact spot on a map.

Now, many people use phones to find their way. It is easy to go anywhere you want to go.

To navigate, you must find your position. This means knowing exactly where you are. You also need to know your direction. Early travelers used the stars and waves to find paths. Later, they used tools like the compass.

Sailors also used an astrolabe, which is a tool to measure the height of stars.

Finding your spot on Earth uses two numbers. Latitude tells you how far north or south you are from the equator. Longitude tells you how far east or west you are from a line called the prime meridian. For a long time, finding longitude was very hard. Sailors needed a marine chronometer to help. This is a very accurate clock. Today, we use satellites to find our way. We call this GPS. Most people now use smartphones to navigate every day.

Sailors use it to move ships safely on or under the water. Pilots use it to fly planes between different places. Even people walking on land use it to find their way. It is all about knowing your position and your direction.

To navigate, you must find your exact location. This often involves finding where two lines meet. One way is to use latitude and longitude. Latitude is your distance north or south of the equator. It goes from 0 degrees at the equator to 90 degrees at the poles.

Longitude is your distance east or west of the prime meridian. This line is also called the Greenwich meridian. Sailors use a sextant to measure the height of stars. This helps them find their latitude in the sky.

People have been navigating for a very long time. Early Polynesians used memory to find islands in the ocean. They watched the stars and the weather to find a path.

They even used stick charts to track ocean waves. The compass is one of the oldest tools. It likely came from China during the Han dynasty around 206 BC. Later, the Song dynasty used it for sea travel in the 11th century. In Europe, the compass appeared around the year 1190.

Many famous explorers used navigation to change the world. In 1488, Bartolomeu Dias reached the Indian Ocean. Christopher Columbus sailed west in 1492 to find the Indies.

He ended up discovering the Americas. In 1522, the Magellan-Elcano expedition completed the first trip around the Earth. This voyage was led by Ferdinand Magellan. It was finished by Juan Sebastián Elcano after Magellan died in 1521. Finding longitude was a hard job for many years. It became easier after John Harrison made an accurate marine chronometer.

Today, we use very high technology to find our way. Most modern navigation uses electronic receivers. These receivers collect information from satellites in space.

This is how a handheld GPS or a smartphone works. You can see your position on a digital map instantly. This is much faster than using old paper charts. Even big ships use radar to see what is around them.

Navigation is the scientific study of monitoring and controlling movement. It focuses on moving a craft or vehicle from one location to another. This field involves determining a specific position and a direction. Navigators use specialized knowledge to perform these complex tasks. Navigation is divided into four general categories. These are land navigation, marine navigation, aeronautic navigation, and space navigation.

Whether a person is walking or a ship is sailing, the goal remains the same. You must know where you are compared to known locations or patterns.

Marine navigation is a specialized branch used for ships and boats. This includes movement on the surface or underneath the water. Navigators use nautical charts, which can be paper or electronic. International rules called the SOLAS Convention mandate specific equipment for ships based on their size.

Land navigation involves moving people, animals, or vehicles through urban or rural areas. This requires tools like a compass, maps, or GNSS receivers. Aeronautic navigation involves piloting aircraft between geographic positions while constantly monitoring the flight path. Space navigation applies these same principles to movement within the cosmos.

To navigate, one must understand coordinates like latitude and longitude. Latitude is the angular distance north or south of the equator. It is measured in degrees from 0° at the equator to 90° at the poles. In the Northern Hemisphere, mariners once calculated latitude by sighting the pole star, Polaris. Longitude is the angular distance east or west of the prime meridian. This meridian passes through Greenwich.

Finding longitude was historically very difficult. It requires knowing the precise time of a sighting. For many years, mariners used lunar distances to calculate Greenwich Mean Time.

This allowed them to find their longitude without a clock.

Humanity has practiced navigation for thousands of years. Early Polynesian navigators used memory and observation to cross open oceans. They studied the motion of stars, weather patterns, and wildlife. They even used Marshall Islands Stick Charts to record ocean swells.

The compass is one of the oldest instruments. It originated in China during the Han dynasty around 206 BC. The Song dynasty used it for sea navigation in the 11th century. By 1190, the compass appeared in the Islamic world and Western Europe.

During the Age of Discovery, new instruments changed exploration. The mariner's astrolabe was used in the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages. Spanish astronomer Ramon Llull recorded a sea astrolabe in 1295. Portuguese navigators later perfected these tools. Other tools included the quadrant and the cross-staff. The cross-staff was used by Arab navigators but was difficult to use. It often required the user to squint at the sun. To fix this, John Davis invented the backstaff in 1595.

Major historical voyages relied on these evolving technologies. In 1488, Bartolomeu Dias reached the Indian Ocean. In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed west and reached the Americas.

These electronic tools have largely superseded traditional methods like the sextant and the manual compass.
