Consequently, they withdrew their company and formed the World Wide Wrestling Federation. This event marked a major split in the wrestling landscape.

By the 1970s and 1980s, the NWA faced intense competition from the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).

The WWF began a national expansion that threatened the old territory model. Videotape trading and cable television made it harder to keep regional stories separate. Fans could now see stars like Ric Flair on television every week. This reduced the impact of special appearances in local regions. In 1983, the WWF left the NWA entirely. The NWA responded by creating major flagship events like Starrcade.

This event was one of the first to be broadcast via closed-circuit networks.

Financial struggles led to significant structural changes in the late 1980s. In 1988, Jim Crockett Promotions faced bankruptcy. Ted Turner eventually purchased the assets of the company. He renamed it World Championship Wrestling, or WCW.

While WCW was a major NWA member, it eventually left the alliance in September 1993. The NWA then spent years as a loose coalition of independent groups. From 2002 to 2007, the NWA gave exclusivity to the TNA promotion. This period saw the NWA World Heavyweight and Tag Team championships managed by TNA. The organization eventually moved away from this partnership in May 2007.

In recent years, the NWA has undergone a complete transformation. In 2017, Billy Corgan purchased the organization. Between 2019 and 2023, the NWA transitioned into a singular, stand-alone promotion.

However, the NWA has also looked back to its roots. In October 2023, the organization re-established its historic territory system. The first promotion to be sanctioned under this new system was NWA Exodus Pro Midwest. This shows how the NWA continues to evolve while respecting its long history.
