Nashik is the fourth largest city in its state, following Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. The city is part of a larger area called the Nashik Metropolitan Region. Many people visit because the river is a sacred site for Hindus. Every twelve years, a huge festival called the Kumbh Mela takes place here.

The land around the city is very interesting to look at. Nashik sits on the edge of the Deccan Plateau, which is an ancient volcanic formation. The area has lush, mountainous terrain and a tropical climate. This means the weather is usually mild, with a warm season and a cool season from November to February. During the cool months, the days are warm, but the nights can get quite chilly. The city has also worked hard to keep its air and water clean. For a time, the Godavari River was struggling due to pollution from nearby factories. However, the river has since been successfully cleaned up.

Nashik has a very long and storied history. According to Hindu traditions, the city has had many different names through different ages. It was called Padmanagar in the Satya Yuga and Navashikh in the Kali Yuga. The famous epic, the Ramayana, links the city to the story of King Rama. It is said that Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana lived here during a fourteen-year exile. The area known as Panchavati is considered a very holy place with many temples. Only Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur are larger. It is also the largest city in Northern Maharashtra. The city serves as the administrative headquarters for the Nashik district.

The geography of the region is shaped by ancient processes. Nashik lies on the western edge of the Deccan Plateau. This plateau is an ancient volcanic formation. The landscape features lush, mountainous terrain.

The Godavari River originates at the Brahmagiri Mountain in Trimbakeshwar. From there, it flows down toward the city. The city's climate is a tropical wet and dry type. This is known scientifically as Köppen Aw. Because of its high altitude, the weather is relatively mild. Temperatures rise slightly in October. A cool season follows from November to February. During this time, days are warm but nights are cool. The air becomes extremely dry during these months.

The history of the city includes many different eras. During the Mughal period, Nashik was known as Gulshanabad. In the late 1800s, the city had a tram system. The Nashik Tram started around 1889. It ran from the Old Municipal Building to the Nashik Road railway station. This route was about eight to ten kilometers long. At that time, the area was covered in dense jungle. The tram served the city for almost 44 years. The 1900s also saw significant political activity. In 1909, an event occurred involving the assassination of Governor A. M. T. Jackson. This led to the Nasik Conspiracy Case of 1910. Later, B. R. Ambedkar led the Nashik Satyagraha in 1930. He worked for the entry of Dalits into the Kalaram Mandir.

Today, Nashik is a powerful center for industry and economy. It is a major hub for defence and aerospace manufacturing. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has a plant in Ozar. This plant manufactures and overhauls aircraft for the Indian Air Force.

The city also handles important government printing. The Currency Note Press and India Security Press are located on Nashik Road. These facilities print Indian currency and government stamp papers. The city is also part of the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Project. This is a massive $90 billion project. Nashik is becoming a destination for Information Technology companies as well. Companies like Tata Consultancy Services have invested in the area.
