Najran Province is a large area in southern Saudi Arabia.
This region has played a big part in history for a very long time. In ancient times, Najran was a main stop on the Incense Route. This was a path used by travelers to move goods. All the routes from ancient Yemen had to meet at Najran. From there, the paths split into two directions. Some paths went north toward Egypt and the Levant. Other paths went northeast toward the Persian Gulf.
Many different groups of people have lived in this valley over the years. Long ago, there were large communities of Christians and Jews. In the 7th century, the Christians of Najran made a special pact with Muhammad. This agreement promised them protection. Later, the Jewish community in the area grew. Some of these families were Yemenite Jews. In 1949, some of these people moved south to Aden. They eventually moved to Israel as part of a large airlift.
Today, the province is home to many people who follow Ismaili Shia Islam. Most of these people belong to the Yam tribe or the Hamdan tribe. The province is divided into six areas called governorates. The largest of these is Sharurah. Other areas include Habona, Thar, Yadamah, Badr Al-Janub, and Khubash. The city of Najran is the seat of the provincial government. A governor, or Emir, is chosen by the King of Saudi Arabia to lead the area.
There are many things to see and do in Najran Province. The area was once famous for making things from leather. You can also find shops that sell special daggers called Jambiya.
Najran Province is a large administrative region in southern Saudi Arabia. It covers an area of 360,000 square kilometers. The province is located along the border with Yemen.
Historically, Najran served as a vital hub for the ancient Incense Route. This was a network of trade paths used to transport goods. All routes leaving ancient Yemen to the north or west converged at Najran. From this central point, the routes branched into two main directions. Some paths led north through the Ḥijāz toward Egypt and the Levant. Other paths traveled northeast toward Gerrha near the Persian Gulf. This strategic location made the area a focal point for ancient travelers and traders.
Ancient history shows that Najran has seen many different rulers and conflicts. In 25 BC, the Roman prefect Aelius Gallus led an expedition to conquer Arabia Felix. He won a battle near Najran and used the city as a military base. Later, in AD 280, the Ḥimyarites likely took control of the area after conquering the Sabeans. In the 6th century, the city was a strong Christian and Aksumite center. However, the Jewish king Dhū Nuwās attacked the city and killed many inhabitants. Some historical estimates suggest the death toll reached as high as 20,000 people.
Religious life in Najran has changed many times over the centuries. In the 5th century, Christianity likely arrived in the region. The historian Ibn Isḥāq suggests Najran was the first place Christianity took root in South Arabia. In the 7th century, the Christians of Najran signed the "Najran Pact" with the prophet Muhammad. This agreement provided them protection as "protected subjects," or dhimmi. Later, in 641, the Christian community was ordered to leave the city. They were deported to Mesopotamia and settled near Kufa in a place called Najānīya.
Jewish communities also have long ties to the province. These communities were historically linked to the Banu al-Harith, who were Yemenite Jews. Following the Saudi conquest of Najrān in 1934, some Jews faced increased persecution. In 1949, approximately 200 Jews fled south to Aden. After settling in the Ḥashid Camp, they were airlifted to Israel during Operation Magic Carpet. Some groups also moved to Cochin to maintain trade connections with Paradesi Jews.
Today, the population is largely composed of the Yam and Hamdan tribes. Most residents follow Ismaili Shia Islam, specifically the Sulaymani branch. The Khushaywa compound, which includes the Mansura Mosque complex, serves as the spiritual capital for Sulaymani Ismailis.
Local culture and economy are still visible in the region. While Najran was once a center for arms manufacture, it was more famous for leather goods. Visitors can still see traditional crafts, such as the making of Jambiya daggers.
