Nahuatl has a very interesting way of building words. It uses a system called polysynthesis and agglutination. This means small fragments of words are strung together. Each fragment is called a morpheme and holds its own meaning. By joining these parts, speakers can make very long and complex words.
Writing became a big part of Nahuatl history later on. After the Spanish conquest, missionaries introduced the Latin script. This allowed Nahuatl to become a literary language. During the 16th and 17th centuries, people wrote many things. They wrote poems, grammars, and administrative documents. They also created codices, which are ancient books.
There are many different varieties of Nahuatl spoken today. Some varieties are so different that people cannot understand each other easily.

Nahuatl is a complex group of closely related languages. It belongs to the Nahuan branch of the Uto-Aztecan language family.
The language uses a unique way to build words. This system is called polysynthesis and agglutination. In this system, small fragments of words are joined together. These fragments are called morphemes. Each morpheme carries its own separate meaning. By stringing many morphemes together, speakers create very long and complex words. This method developed over a long time. It happened as Nahuatl interacted with other Mesoamerican languages. This contact helped shape its grammar and vocabulary.
Nahuatl has many different varieties. Some varieties are so different that they are not mutually intelligible. This means speakers of different varieties may not understand each other. The Mexican government recognizes 30 individual varieties. The Ethnologue recognizes 28 varieties with separate ISO codes. Huasteca Nahuatl is the largest variety. It has over one million speakers. Most modern varieties are influenced by Spanish. However, varieties near the Valley of Mexico remain closer to the classical form.
History shows how Nahuatl became a prestige language. It has been spoken in central Mexico since at least the seventh century AD. The Mexica people used it to dominate central Mexico. Their influence made the variety from Tenochtitlan very important. During the 16th and 17th centuries, it became a literary language. Spanish missionaries introduced the Latin script to the region.
The origins of the language are still being studied. Some linguists believe the Uto-Aztecan family began in the southwestern United States. They suggest speakers migrated south into Mexico in waves. Other researchers propose a different idea. They suggest the family started in central Mexico and moved north. Most scholars agree that Nahuan speakers arrived in Mesoamerica around AD 500. This was near the end of the Early Classic period. Before this, they likely lived near the Cora and Huichol people.
Nahuatl has a massive impact on the modern world. Many words from Nahuatl moved into Spanish. From Spanish, they spread to hundreds of other languages.
Today, Nahuatl holds a special legal status. Mexico's 2003 General Law of Linguistic Rights is very important. It recognizes Nahuatl as a national language. It has the same validity as Spanish in the regions where it is spoken. This law also protects 63 other Indigenous languages in Mexico.
