Because the city has many large, green patches, people call it the "Emerald City." It is also known as the "Gateway to Calabarzon" because it is the southernmost city in its region.

The land in Muntinlupa is mostly flat. However, the ground slopes toward the east near the lake. In the western part, there are gentle rolling hills. The elevation gets higher toward the southwest. The weather changes with the seasons. There is a dry season from November to April. The wet season lasts from May to November. The rain is heaviest in August. The air is hottest during April and May. During the dry season, the lake water level goes down. This leaves behind soil that people use for farming.

Long ago, Muntinlupa was a very different place. In the 1800s, it was mostly used for fishing and farming.

In the early 1800s, a friar named Joaquín Martínez de Zúñiga described it as a lakeside town. It was once part of the province of Tondo. Later, the city became part of the province of Rizal. In 1917, Muntinlupa became its own independent municipality. It finally became an official city on March 1, 1995. This happened when President Fidel V. Ramos signed a law to make it the 65th city in the country.

Many important things are located in the city today. Alabang is a central business district with many tall structures.

It used to be a place called the Alabang Stock Farm. The city is also home to the New Bilibid Prison. This is the national prison where dangerous criminals are kept. It was moved to the hills of Muntinlupa in 1941. The city is also home to Ayala Alabang Village. This is one of the largest and most expensive places to live in the country.

The names of the different areas in the city tell a story. Many areas, called barangays, are named after plants or the land.

For example, Tunasan comes from the tunas plant. Putatan and Cupang are named after trees. Buli is named after the buri palm. Alabang is named after the river that flows through it. Even the name Muntinlupa has a history. It likely comes from the Tagalog words "munting lupà." This means "small land" or "little soil."

Muntinlupa is a highly urbanized city located in the National Capital Region of the Philippines.

It serves as a vital link between the capital and the surrounding regions. Because it is the southernmost city in its region, it is often called the "Gateway to Calabarzon." The city is also nicknamed the "Emerald City." This name comes from the many large, green patches visible from high above. These green spaces are quite unusual for the Metro Manila area.

The geography of Muntinlupa is defined by its varied terrain and neighbors. To the north lies Taguig, while Parañaque sits to the northwest. The city is bordered by Las Piñas and Bacoor to the west. To the southwest, it meets Bacoor and Dasmariñas in Cavite. San Pedro is located to the south. To the east, the city meets Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the Philippines.

The land is mostly flat but slopes toward the east near the lake. Gentle rolling hills occupy the western part of the city. The elevation increases toward the southwest portion of the territory.

Climate and natural patterns shape life in the city. The year is divided into a dry season and a wet season. The dry season runs from November through April. The wet season begins in May and lasts until November. Rainfall reaches its peak during the month of August. Most rain falls between June and September. The hottest temperatures occur during April and May. Conversely, the lowest temperatures are recorded in January and February. During the dry season, the water level in Laguna de Bay subsides. This exposes soil that people then use for farming.

The history of Muntinlupa shows a major shift from nature to industry. In the early 1800s, the area was a lakeside town. It was primarily used for fishing and farming. An Augustinian friar named Joaquín Martínez de Zúñiga described it in his writings. At that time, it was the farthest town of the province of Tondo. In 1869, the lands were transferred to the state and large landholders. In 1898, the town supported the Philippine Revolution. It joined the revolutionary government led by General Emilio Aguinaldo.

Administrative changes occurred frequently during the American occupation. Muntinlupa was part of Rizal province from 1901 to 1903. It was also part of Rizal from 1905 to 1975. In 1903, it was briefly merged with Pateros and Biñan. However, residents protested these changes through their town head, Marcelo Fresnedi. They successfully petitioned to return the municipality to the province of Rizal. On December 19, 1917, Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison signed an order for independence. This made Muntinlupa an independent municipality starting January 1, 1918.

Ayala Alabang Village is another major site. It is one of the largest and most expensive residential communities in the country. On March 1, 1995, Muntinlupa officially became the 65th city in the Philippines.

Understanding the names of the city's parts reveals its natural roots. The city is divided into nine barangays. Many of these names come from local plants or geography. Tunasan is named after the tunas plant. Putatan and Cupang are named after specific trees. Buli comes from the buri palm. Alabang is named after its local river. The name "Muntinlupa" likely comes from the Tagalog words "munting lupà." This phrase translates to "small land" or "little soil."
