The Mumbai Metro is a fast train system in India.
Building the metro is a very big job. It is being built in three phases. Most of the tracks are elevated. This means they are high up in the air. Some tracks go underground. A small part stays on the ground.
Work on the first phase began in 2008. The first line started running in 2014. Some parts of the project were late. This happened because of land and nature rules. Now, more lines are opening. One line is called the Aqua Line. It is a line that goes underground.
When the whole system is done, it will be huge. It will have sixteen lines. There will be 350 stations for people to use. The city hopes to finish everything by October 2026.
The Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit train system. It serves the city of Mumbai and the wider region in Maharashtra, India.
The metro works using different types of tracks. Most of the lines are elevated, which means they are built high above the ground. About 25% of the system is underground. A very small portion is built at-grade, or right on the ground.
Building this massive system is a long project. It is being built in three phases over 15 years. The project is expected to be fully complete by October 2026.
Many different groups help run and build the lines. Blue Line 1 is operated by Mumbai Metro One Private Limited. This is a joint venture involving Reliance Infrastructure and the MMRDA.
The metro connects to many ways people travel in Mumbai. Most people in the area already use public mass transport. The existing suburban railway carries over 70 lakh passengers every single day.
The Mumbai Metro is a large rapid transit train system. It serves the city of Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region in Maharashtra, India. The system serves as a modern solution for a massive population. As of 2011, the metropolitan area had over 2 crore, or 20 million, people. This large number of residents creates a high demand for movement. The metro is designed to reduce traffic congestion on roads. It also supplements the existing Mumbai Suburban Railway network.
The metro operates using several different types of track layouts. Approximately 25% of the total network is built underground. Most of the remaining lines are elevated, meaning they run on tracks raised above the ground. A very small portion of the system is built at-grade, which means it sits directly on the ground.
Different organizations manage and build various parts of the network. Blue Line 1 is operated by Mumbai Metro One Private Limited. This is a joint venture between Reliance Infrastructure, which holds a 74% stake, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, which holds 26%.
The history of the metro shows a long and complex construction process. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the first foundation stone in June 2006. Actual construction work did not begin until February 2008. After a successful trial run in May 2013, the first line began operations on 8 June 2014.
Recent years have seen significant progress in the system's growth. On 2 April 2022, two new corridors, 2A and 7, were inaugurated. The Aqua Line 3 has also reached major milestones recently. An underground section of the Aqua Line 3 opened on 5 October 2024.
The need for the metro is driven by Mumbai's massive scale. The existing Mumbai Suburban Railway is very busy. It carries over 70 lakh, or 7 million, passengers every day. Before the 1980s, transport in the city was not such a major issue. However, the population doubled by 2010. This rapid growth made it difficult for road and rail infrastructure to keep up. The metro provides a way to reach areas not connected by the suburban rail. It also helps people travel within a specific approach distance.
The Mumbai Metro is a vital part of a larger transportation ecosystem. Most people in the region already use public mass transport. In fact, the modal share for public transport is 88%. The metro works alongside the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport system. These buses act as feeder services for passengers. They help people complete their journeys from the metro stations to their final destinations. By connecting different modes of travel, the metro helps the entire city move more efficiently.
