In more complex animals like earthworms, food goes in one end and waste leaves through an anus.

Scientists study how mouths form to group animals. During growth, an embryo forms a small dent called a blastopore. In one group called deuterostomes, this dent becomes the anus. The mouth forms later as a new opening. In the other group, called protostomes, the dent helps form both the mouth and the anus. This helps us understand how different animal families are related.

A mouth, also known as the oral opening, is a vital body orifice. It serves as the primary entrance for food ingestion and a tool for vocalization. The cavity located immediately behind this opening is the oral cavity. This space marks the beginning of the alimentary canal, which is the digestive tube. This tube leads into the pharynx and then the gullet. In tetrapod vertebrates, the mouth is bounded by the lips and cheeks. Because of these boundaries, the oral cavity is also called the buccal cavity.

The way a mouth forms during development helps scientists classify animals. Most bilaterian animals possess a gut tube with two openings: a mouth and an anus. During the growth of an embryo, a small dent called the blastopore forms. In a group called deuterostomes, this blastopore becomes the anus. The mouth forms later as the gut tunnels through to create a new opening.

In protostomes, the blastopore helps form both the mouth and the anus. Recent research shows the edges of the blastopore slit close in the middle. This process leaves openings at both ends for the mouth and anus.

Simple organisms use very different methods for nutrition. The first multicellular animals likely had no mouth or gut at all. They used a process called endocytosis to engulf food particles. In this process, food is enclosed in vacuoles where enzymes perform digestion. This occurs intracellularly, meaning it happens inside the cells. Modern simple organisms like Amoeba and Paramecium still use this method. Even sponges, which can grow quite large, capture food through endocytosis rather than using a mouth.

Invertebrates show a massive variety of mouth structures. Some, like the sea anemone, use the mouth as both an entrance and an exit. These animals use circular muscles to open or close the opening. Others, like annelids, have a separate anus to keep digestion and waste apart. Molluscs often use a specialized structure called a radula to scrape particles from surfaces. Insects possess complex mouthparts including mandibles, maxillae, and a labium. These can be modified for chewing, piercing, or even sucking.

Vertebrates have highly specialized buccal cavities for different lifestyles. Fish often use their jaws to expand the pharynx and suck in prey. In amphibians, many adults are carnivorous and use a sticky, elongated tongue. Some frogs have vomerine teeth attached to the roof of the mouth. Reptiles like crocodilians have teeth anchored in deep sockets. They are remarkable because they can replace about 80 teeth up to 50 times.

Many mammals use panting to increase water evaporation across the tongue and mouth. Birds use a similar method called gular fluttering, where they flap skin near the throat. The mouth is also a tool for social signaling. Animals may use a threat display by gaping widely to show their teeth.

Finally, the mouth is essential for producing complex sounds. In most animals, sound is produced by air moving over vocal cords in the larynx. Humans use a specific set of parts called articulators to create speech. These include the pharynx, soft palate, hard palate, alveolar ridge, tongue, teeth, and lips. By moving the tongue or lips, we change how air flows. This changes the resonance and allows us to produce many different sounds.
