Climbers often call this mountain the "gentle giant." This name comes from the fact that its paths are not too hard. Most routes are categorized as Class 1 to 2. These paths do not require special rock climbing skills. The standard route starts from the east near Twin Lakes. Another way is the South Elbert Trail, which is longer but has a less steep climb. The Black Cloud Trail is the most difficult main route. It is very steep and rocky in some places.

Miners named the mountain for Samuel Hitt Elbert. He was a statesman for Colorado. He served as the Governor of the Territory of Colorado from 1873 to 1874. He helped broker a treaty with the Ute tribe in 1873. This treaty opened more land for mining and railroads. Henry W. Stuckle was the first person to record climbing the peak. He did this in 1874 while working for the Hayden Survey. Later, in 1949, a Jeep was driven to the top. People did this to see if the area was good for skiing.

The mountain is made of very old materials. The summit ridge is made of metamorphic basement rock. This rock is about 1.7 billion years old. The rest of the mountain is mostly made of quartzite. Long ago, huge glaciers moved over these peaks. These glaciers left behind features like a large cirque. A cirque is a bowl-shaped area in the mountains. You can also see lakes like Turquoise Lake and Twin Lakes nearby.

Life on the mountain changes as you go up. The lower slopes have many trees like pine, spruce, and aspen. Higher up, you find an alpine environment. This area has plants like the silky phacelia and alpine avens. You might also see the white orchid called Platanthera hyperborea.

Many animals live here too. You can find black bears, mule deer, and elk. Small animals like pikas and marmots live among the rocks. Weather can change very fast at high spots. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer. It is important to be off the summit by early afternoon to stay safe.

Mount Elbert is the highest summit in the Rocky Mountains of North America. It reaches an elevation of 14,440 feet. This makes it the highest point in the state of Colorado. It is also the second-highest summit in the contiguous United States. Only Mount Whitney in California is taller.

The mountain is a prominent "fourteener," which is a term for peaks over 14,000 feet. It sits within the San Isabel National Forest. It is the highest peak in the Sawatch Range. It is also the highest point in the Mississippi River drainage basin. This is the massive area where water flows toward the Mississippi River.

The geology of Mount Elbert tells a story of ancient forces. The mountain is part of the Sawatch Range. This range formed during the Laramide Orogeny, a period of mountain building. The range separated from the Mosquito Range about 28 million years ago. The mountain is composed largely of quartzite. However, the summit ridge is made of metamorphic basement rock. This rock is Pre-Cambrian in origin. It is approximately 1.7 billion years old. There are also igneous intrusions, which are rocks formed from cooled magma. These include pegmatite, gneiss, and schist.

Glaciers have shaped the landscape of the mountain. In the past, heavy glaciation left behind specific features. On the eastern side, the base shows igneous and metamorphic rocks. These were exposed when glaciers receded, leaving a lateral moraine. A moraine is a pile of rocks and debris left by a glacier. There is also a large cirque on the eastern side. A cirque is a bowl-shaped valley carved by ice. This area contains a small tarn, which is a mountain lake. Nearby, you can find Twin Lakes and Turquoise Lake. Twin Lakes formed from the natural dam of end moraines. Turquoise Lake was created by the manmade Sugar Loaf Dam.

History connects the mountain to the early days of Colorado. Miners named the peak for Samuel Hitt Elbert. He was a Colorado statesman. He served as the Governor of the Territory of Colorado from 1873 to 1874. In September 1873, he helped broker a treaty with the Ute tribe. This treaty opened more than 20 million acres for mining and railroads.

The first recorded ascent was by Henry W. Stuckle in 1874. He was part of the Hayden Survey. In 1949, a Jeep was driven to the summit. This was done to judge if the area was suitable for skiing.

Measuring the height of Mount Elbert has caused some controversy. It was originally measured at 14,440 feet. Later, a re-evaluation of mapped elevations changed the number. This change happened in 1988 due to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988. Before this, the measurement used the Sea Level Datum of 1929. A dispute arose after the Great Depression. Mount Elbert and Mount Massive are very close in height. They differ by only 11 feet. Some people even built stone piles on Mount Massive to make it taller. They wanted to beat Mount Elbert, but they failed. Mount Elbert remains the highest peak in Colorado.

Life on the mountain changes with the altitude. The lower slopes are heavily forested. You will find lodgepole pine, spruce, aspen, and fir trees. The summit is an alpine environment. This area features plants like silky phacelia and alpine avens.

You can also find the white orchid, Platanthera hyperborea. Many animals live in these habitats. Black bears, mule deer, and elk are often seen. You might also spot marmots, pikas, or pocket gophers. Grizzly bears used to live here, but they are now extirpated, meaning they no longer exist in this area.

Climbing Mount Elbert requires careful planning. There are three main routes. The standard route starts near Twin Lakes and goes up the east side. The South Elbert Trail is longer but has a gentler slope. The Black Cloud Trail is the most difficult. It is a Class 2 climb that can take 14 hours. It is very steep, rocky, and unstable.

Weather can change very quickly. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer. Hail and snow can happen any time of year. Climbers must watch for altitude sickness. This can cause breathing problems or even death. Most people try to finish their climb by early afternoon to avoid storms.
