Inside these engines, various mechanical processes drive the propeller. Most modern motorboats use an internal combustion engine to power a single propeller. This engine uses a gearbox and a drivetrain to transfer power. Some rare motorboats use pump-jet propulsion instead of a propeller. Inboard engines can also be arranged in two specific ways: direct drive or V-drive. A direct drive mounts the powerplant near the middle with a straight shaft. Frederick Lanchester invented the "wick carburetor" to mix fuel and air correctly. This device drew fuel into wicks to be vaporized, and he patented it in 1905. Other pioneers, such as J. D. Roots, operated early ferry services on the River Thames using internal combustion engines. These early developments paved the way for the high-performance vessels seen today.

Racing became a major part of motorboat culture in the early 20th century. In 1903, Alfred Charles William Harmsworth established the Harmsworth Cup.
