Because so many people live in such a large space, it is one of the most populated parts of the country. The government works in several places, including Moscow and Krasnogorsk.

The land in this region changes as you travel through it. Most of the area is quite flat. In the west and north, you will find the Moscow Uplands. These are hilly areas with some high points. Near the village of Shapkino, the land reaches a high spot.

The northern hills have lakes left behind by old glaciers. In the east, the land becomes the Meshchera Lowlands. This area is very flat and has many wet marshes. The lowest part of the region is by the Oka River.

Long ago, huge sheets of ice called glaciers moved across this land. These glaciers shaped the ground we see today. They left behind ridges of earth and many different types of rocks.

You can find rocks like granite, gneiss, and limestone in the soil. A long time ago, a sea even covered this entire area. We know this because scientists found phosphate and sand from that time. These ancient layers of earth are still under the ground today.

The region is very important for making things. Many factories work here to create food, energy, and chemicals.

People also use the natural minerals found in the earth. They dig up high-quality sand to make glass. They also find white clay to make things like pottery.

Some special limestone was even used to decorate famous buildings in Moscow. There are also many mines that pull peat from the marshy lowlands.

In the winter, the temperature can drop very low. Snow often covers the ground from November until April. Many rivers, like the Volga and the Oka, freeze over during this time.

In the spring, the melting snow causes the water levels in the rivers to rise. This cycle of seasons is a very important part of the region's rhythm.

It is a highly populated region with 8,524,665 residents according to the 2021 Census. This makes it the second most populous federal subject in the country. Geographically, the oblast mostly surrounds the federal city of Moscow. However, Moscow is a separate federal subject and is not part of the oblast itself. The oblast borders several other regions, including Tver to the northwest and Smolensk to the west.

Its public authorities are spread across various locations, such as Moscow and Krasnogorsk.

The physical landscape of the region is diverse and shaped by geological history. Much of the area is flat or consists of lowlands. In the western and northern parts, the Moscow Uplands create a hilly terrain. The northern part of these uplands is steeper than the southern section.

These hills contain lakes formed by ancient glaciers, such as Lakes Nerskoye and Krugloye. To the north of these uplands lies the Verhnevolzhsk Depression, which is a flat and marshy area. In the east, the vast Meshchera Lowlands dominate the landscape. This area contains many wetlands and features the region's lowest elevation near the Oka River.

Geological processes have left a complex structure beneath the surface. Moscow Oblast sits on the East European craton, which consists of a crystalline basement and sedimentary cover. The basement is made of Archaean and Proterozoic rocks. Above this, layers from the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras have been deposited.

During the Cretaceous period, a sea covered much of the region. This ancient sea left behind phosphate deposits and various types of sand. In the Jurassic period, the sea was even wider. Scientists can still find black clay from this era in the Moscow River valley.

Glaciation played a major role in shaping the modern terrain. Experts believe there were four distinct glaciations in this area. The Middle Pleistocene saw two powerful glaciations, including the Dnieper glacier. The Moscow glaciation stopped just south of the modern city of Moscow.

The most recent event was the Valdai glaciation during the Late Pleistocene. Although it did not cover the oblast directly, it left fluvioglacial deposits in the north. These glaciers moved massive amounts of material, leaving behind moraine ridges. These ridges contain pebbles and boulders made of granite, gneiss, and sandstone.

The region is highly industrialized and rich in various mineral resources. Major industries include metallurgy, oil refining, and mechanical engineering.

The land provides essential materials like high-quality quartz sand for the glass industry. The Yeganovskoye field alone has 33 million tonnes of silica sand reserves. Other important minerals include dolomite, which is used in cement production.

Famous Myachkovo limestone was once used to clad the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Additionally, the marshy lowlands provide large amounts of peat through mining.

The climate is classified as humid continental with very distinct seasons. This means the region experiences short, warm summers and long, cold winters.

Winters typically last from mid-November until late March. During this time, the average temperature stays below freezing for many months. The snow depth can be significant, and the soil freezes deeply. In the summer, the warmest month is July.

While summers are generally warm, severe droughts can occur once every 25 to 30 years.

Water systems are vital to the geography and economy of Moscow Oblast. There are more than 300 rivers with lengths exceeding 50 kilometers.

The Volga and the Oka are the most significant navigable rivers. Most rivers in the region are fed by melting snow, causing water levels to rise in April and May. The Moscow Canal is another important feature, using several reservoirs to provide drinking water to Moscow.

There are also about 350 lakes, most of which are shallow and were created by glaciers.
