For many bound morphemes, like the English past tense "-ed," an isolation form does not exist. However, for some words, the isolation form helps reveal the underlying structure. In some American English dialects, "plant" is pronounced /plænt/, while "planting" is /plæntɪŋ/. Here, the isolation form /plænt/ likely represents the underlying form. In French, the word "petit" loses its final "t" in isolation, but the "t" reappears in the feminine form "petite."

Rules in morphophonology can also interact in specific ways. If rule A creates the environment for rule B to work, they are in a feeding relationship. This is known as conjunctive ordering. If rule A destroys the environment needed for rule B, it is a bleeding relationship. This is called disjunctive ordering. There are also more complex interactions called counterfeeding and counterbleeding. These relationships show how the order of linguistic rules determines the final sound of a word. This complexity demonstrates how deeply integrated sound and meaning are within human language systems.
