Different species within the genus show various colors and patterns. While many are metallic blue, others are quite different. Some species are entirely white, such as *Morpho catenarius*. The rare *Morpho sulkowskyi* is fundamentally white but shows pearlescent purple and teal iridescence. Other species can be tawny orange or dark brown. The genus is also divided into several subgenera. These include *Iphimedeia*, *Iphixibia*, *Cytheritis*, *Balachowskyna*, *Cypritis*, *Pessonia*, *Crasseia*, and *Morpho*. Within these, species are organized into groups like the *hercules* group or the *helenor* group.
Many *Morpho* species exhibit sexual dimorphism. This means males and females look different. In species like *Morpho cypris*, only the males are iridescent blue. The females are brown and yellow to help them stay hidden. In other species, like *Morpho anaxibia*, the females are partially iridescent but less blue than the males. This suggests that bright colors are used for intrasexual communication between males. The iridescent colors are found only on the dorsal, or top, side of the wings. The ventral, or underside, of the wings is usually brown. Both sides often feature ocelli, which are eyespots. These spots may act as automimicry to trick predators. 
The life cycle of a *Morpho* lasts between 69 and 75 days. It begins when larvae hatch from pale-green, dewdrop-like eggs. 

Survival in the wild requires constant vigilance. *Morpho* butterflies are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. Males are territorial and patrol forest streams to chase rivals. They face many predators, including lizards, frogs, and birds like the jacamar. Some butterflies, such as *Morpho amathonte*, are very strong fliers. This may be a form of pursuit aposematism. This theory suggests that bright colors and fast flight might teach birds not to pursue them. Additionally, some species are poisonous. They sequester toxins from the plants they eat as caterpillars. Unfortunately, humans also pose a threat. The beauty of these butterflies attracts collectors and artists globally. Deforestation and habitat fragmentation also threaten their survival in tropical forests.
