People have studied these landforms for a long time. The word moraine comes from French and even older words meaning a mound or a snout. A scientist named Horace Bénédict de Saussure introduced the term to geology in 1779. Later, Gerard De Geer described a specific type of ridge in 1889.

Moraines form through several distinct geological processes. These processes are often divided into passive and active types. Passive processes involve the placement of supraglacial sediments. These are sediments that sit on top of the ice. They are moved onto the landscape with very little reworking. This often creates hummocky moraines. Active processes involve glaciotectonism. This is when the movement of the ice itself forms or reshapes the sediment. This can create push moraines or thrust-block moraines. These are made of till and reworked proglacial sediment.

Glaciers can also create moraines using water. Glacial streams flow out from the edges of the ice. These streams carry sand and gravel deposits. These deposits can join together to form a long bank. This bank marks the edge of the ice margin. Some processes combine to form a single moraine. Most moraines actually represent a continuum of these different processes. In some places, like southernmost Chile, the reworking of moraines creates placer deposits of gold.

Scientists classify moraines by their location and shape. Lateral moraines are parallel ridges along the sides of a glacier. They can form from rocks falling off valley walls. They can also come from tributary streams. These ridges can rise high above the valley floor. They can be very long. Near the glacier margin, the slopes can be as steep as 80 degrees. Further away, the slopes are usually between 29 and 36 degrees.

Medial moraines form in the center of a valley. They occur when two glaciers meet and join together. The debris from their sides merges into one ridge. The Kaskawulsh Glacier in the Yukon has a medial moraine 1 km wide.

End moraines, or terminal moraines, form at the snout of a glacier. They act like a conveyor belt. The ice carries debris to the bottom and drops it there. Terminal moraines mark the maximum advance of the ice. If a glacier pauses while retreating, it leaves a recessional moraine. These appear as small ridges behind the terminal moraine. Ground moraines are different because they lack tall ridges. They form sheets of till over flat or irregular ground. They often create gently rolling hills with less than 30 meters of relief.

There are also specialized types of basal moraines. Rogen moraines form ribs perpendicular to the ice flow. They are found in Sweden. The depressions between these ribs can fill with water. This makes them look like tiger stripes from the air. De Geer moraines are similar but are smaller ridges. They can be up to 5 m high and 50 m wide. Gerard De Geer first described them in 1889.
