In February 2002, its brightness increased by a factor of 10,000 in just one day. The Hubble Space Telescope observed a light echo from this outburst. History shows how our understanding of this area has grown over time. The definition of Monoceros is attributed to the 17th-century cartographer Petrus Plancius. He included it on a globe around 1612 or 1613. Later, the German astronomer Jakob Bartsch charted it as "Unicornu" in 1624. In 1781, William Herschel discovered it and called it a beautiful sight. Some researchers believe the constellation might be older. They point to an astrological work from 1564 that mentioned a horse in this position. However, it is not certain if that horse was meant to be a unicorn.
Monoceros also provides a look at how planetary systems might work. In 2009, scientists discovered two Super-Earth exoplanets in one system. These planets are named CoRoT-7b and CoRoT-7c. CoRoT-7b was found by the CoRoT satellite. CoRoT-7c was detected by the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher. Until 2011, CoRoT-7b was the smallest exoplanet with a measured diameter. Its diameter is 1.58 times that of Earth. This means its volume is 3.95 times larger than Earth's volume.
Finally, the constellation connects to many different fields of study. The presence of the galactic plane means interstellar dust can hide background galaxies. This dust makes the region a complex place for astronomers to study. We also find unique objects like Hubble's Variable Nebula, or NGC 2261. This nebula is 2,500 light-years away and was discovered by Herschel in 1783. It is illuminated by the young star R Monocerotis. This interaction makes the nebula both an emission and a reflection nebula. Some scientists think this might represent an early stage of a planetary system.
