He also worked at the Center for the Preservation and Propagation of Traditional Persian Music. He served as a conductor and a soloist there. Lotfi taught music at Tehran University after he graduated in 1973. He also led the School of Music at the University of Tehran from 1978 to 1980. He was a leader at the "Chavosh" Center too.

He worked with many famous singers in his career. One of his most famous partners was Mohammad-Reza Shajarian. They performed together in a special concert in 1976. In that concert, they played a mode called Rast-Panjgah. No one had played that mode for at least 20 years! Lotfi also worked with singers like Shahram Nazeri and Hengameh Akhavan. Lotfi traveled to many different parts of the world. He went to Italy in 1984 to perform and study. He lived in the United States from 1986 until he died. His older brother encouraged him to play the tar. In 1964, Lotfi won first prize at the Young Musicians Festival in Iran. This early success led him to formal studies in Tehran. He attended the Persian National Music Conservatory starting in 1965.

During his training, Lotfi studied under several eminent masters. He learned from Habibollah Salehi and Master Ali Akbar Shahnazi. He also studied the Radif, a collection of melodies, from Abdollah Davami. Master Sa'id Hormozi taught him how to play the setar. While at the College of Fine Arts at Tehran University, he studied with Master Nour-Ali Boroumand. These teachers provided the foundation for his technical mastery. He eventually joined the faculty of Fine Arts at Tehran University in 1973.

Lotfi held many leadership roles within the Iranian music community. He worked as a soloist and conductor at the Center for the Preservation and Propagation of Traditional Persian Music. Between 1978 and 1980, he served as the Head of the School of Music at the University of Tehran. He also directed the "Chavosh" Center. Lotfi co-founded the Shayda Ensemble to promote traditional music. He even researched folk music for National Radio and Television.

Collaboration was a major part of Lotfi's professional life. He worked with many celebrated singers and musicians. One of his most famous partners was the singer Mohammad-Reza Shajarian. In 1976, Lotfi and Shajarian performed the Rast-Panjgah mode in a live concert. This was a significant event because no one had performed in that mode for at least 20 years. He also collaborated with Shahram Nazeri and Hengameh Akhavan. Other notable partners included Hossein Alizadeh and Parviz Meshkatian.

Lotfi's influence extended far beyond the borders of Iran. In 1984, he was invited to Italy by the Fondazione Cini. He lived in Italy for two years to participate in seminars and perform concerts. From 1986 until his death, he resided in the United States. During this time, he performed widely across North America, Europe, and Asia. His recordings reached a global audience through his solo work and ensemble performances. He remained a prolific musician throughout his entire career.

Lotfi passed away on May 2, 2014, at the age of 67. He died from prostate cancer. His death was seen as a major moment in music history. Scholar Hamid Dabashi described it as a crucial turning point. He noted that it marked a change in the history of classical Persian music. Lotfi's legacy remains in the way he blended different musical traditions. He transformed a very old art form into something modern and vital.
