The Mogao Caves are in China.

The Mogao Caves are a huge system of temples in China.

Building these caves was a long and careful task.

History tells us that the caves began a long time ago.
Many interesting things have been found inside these walls.

Today, the Mogao Caves are a very famous place.

The Mogao Caves are a massive complex of 500 temples located in China.

Building the caves was a process that spanned over 1,000 years.
Inside the caves, the art served very specific purposes for the community. The walls contain over 400,000 square feet of frescoes and sculptures.
History shows that the site flourished during different Chinese dynasties. In 366 CE, a monk named Le Zun (or Yuezun) reportedly had a vision of a thousand Buddhas in golden light. This event inspired the creation of the first caves. Later, a second monk named Faliang joined him. During the Tang dynasty, Dunhuang became a main hub of Silk Road commerce. This era saw the construction of many caves, including two massive Buddha statues. One of the largest statues was built in 695 CE following an edict by Empress Wu Zetian.
The site eventually saw a period of decline after the Tang dynasty. Construction of new caves stopped entirely after the Yuan dynasty. This happened as Islam spread through much of Central Asia. Also, sea-based trade routes began to replace the Silk Road. As a result, Dunhuang became less populated and was largely forgotten by the outside world. However, local people still used the caves for worship into the early 20th century. This renewed interest eventually led to the modern discovery and study of the site.
A major turning point occurred in 1900 with the discovery of the "Library Cave."

Protecting the caves is a major priority for modern experts. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
