A mirror is an object that reflects an image. 

Long ago, people used pools of water to see. They also used shiny stones like obsidian. Obsidian is a dark volcanic glass. Later, people made mirrors from metals like bronze or silver. Many of these were hard to make. Some were only for rich people.
Today, we mostly use glass mirrors. Makers put a thin layer of metal on the glass. They often use silver or aluminium. This metal layer helps reflect light well. 
Mirrors are useful in many ways. You can use them to fix your hair. Drivers use them to see behind them.

Light moves in waves. When these waves hit a smooth surface, they bounce off at a specific angle. This is called specular reflection. The angle the light hits the mirror is the same as the angle it leaves. 

Humans have used mirrors for a very long time. The first mirrors were likely still pools of water. People also used shiny stones like obsidian. This is a natural volcanic glass. 

Making glass mirrors changed how we see the world. In the 1st century CE, Romans used glass with metal coatings. Later, Venetian glassmakers perfected a way to make high-quality mirrors. They used a tin and mercury mixture to coat the glass.

Glass began to be used for mirrors around the 1st century CE. Roman scholars noted that artisans in Sidon produced glass mirrors. These were coated with lead or gold leaf on the back. The metal provided reflectivity, while the glass offered a smooth, protective surface.
In the Middle Ages, glassmaking technology improved significantly. French glassmakers created flat plates by spinning glass bubbles. Later, a better method was developed in Germany and perfected in Venice by the 16th century. This involved blowing a glass cylinder, cutting it, and unrolling it on a hot plate. Venetian glassmakers used lead glass because it was very clear. They also used a fire-gilding technique with a tin-mercury amalgam. 
Modern mirror production changed during the Industrial Revolution. The invention of the ribbon machine allowed for the bulk production of glass panes. A major breakthrough occurred in 1835 thanks to German chemist Justus von Liebig. He invented the silvered-glass mirror using a wet deposition process. He used the chemical reduction of silver nitrate to deposit a thin layer of silver onto glass. Today, we often use electroplating to apply nickel or chromium to glass. Chromium is frequently used for automotive mirrors. For high-end scientific tools, manufacturers use vacuum deposition methods.
Mirrors are not limited to visible light. The term "reflector" can apply to objects that reflect other types of waves. An acoustic mirror reflects sound waves. These can be used for sonar, seafloor mapping, or atmospheric studies.
