These factories must be very careful. They make sure every coin is the right size and weight. Making coins can be expensive for a country. Sometimes it costs more to make a coin than the coin is worth. In 2016, a U.S. penny cost $0.015 to make. This is more than the one cent it is worth. However, other coins are cheaper to make. It costs the United States Mint much less than 25 cents to make a quarter. The extra money saved helps pay for the minting work. This difference is called seigniorage.

How does a mint actually work? In the old days, people used very simple ways. They would pour hot metal into a mold to cast coins. Or they would hit a piece of metal with a hammer. They used a die, which is a tool with a shape carved into it.

They would place a blank piece of metal on an anvil. Then they would hold a die in place with tongs. A heavy hammer blow would strike the die to leave a mark. Later, makers used a screw press to push the dies down.

Early coins in Europe came from the island of Aegina. In China, mints appeared around the same time. These coins spread to Korea and Japan. The word "mint" actually comes from Rome. It comes from the Temple of Juno Moneta in 269 BCE. People used the name of the goddess Moneta to mean money. Roman mints were used to spread news about new leaders. People saw a new Emperor's face on a coin to learn he was in charge.

New machines changed everything for coin makers. In 1788, a man named Matthew Boulton changed how things worked. He lived in Birmingham and used steam power.

He invented a steam-driven screw press. This machine used a piston to strike coins very fast. His machines could strike between 70 and 84 coins every minute. This made coins much more uniform. They all had the same round shape and weight. This made it much harder for people to make fake coins. Boulton's work helped create the first truly modern coins.

Many famous mints still exist around the world today. The Austrian Mint was established in 1397. It makes special gold coins called the Vienna Philharmonic. The Casa de Moneda de México is the oldest mint in the Americas. It was started in 1535. In the United States, the Philadelphia Mint is a very well-known site.

The production of coins involves complex engineering and careful financial management. When a mint produces a coin, it must balance the cost of materials and labor against the coin's face value. The difference between the production cost and the face value is known as seigniorage. For example, the United States Mint spends much less than 25 cents to produce a quarter. This seigniorage helps fund the operations of the minting body. However, some coins are more expensive to produce than they are worth. Early minting technology relied on two main methods: casting and striking. Casting involves pouring molten metal into a mold to create a shape.

The Romans used clay molds to cast large copper coins. This was done because striking was not suitable for such large masses of metal. Striking is a different process that uses dies to press a design into metal. In the earliest striking methods, a worker placed a blank piece of metal on an anvil. They held a die in place with tongs and hit it with a hammer. This left a "rough incuse," or a sunken mark, on the reverse side. Over time, technology improved. Workers began heating the metal blanks until they were red-hot before striking them between cold dies. By 300 AD, the use of iron dies allowed makers to stop heating the blanks.

As machines became more complex, new tools were invented to increase accuracy. During the Middle Ages, metal bars were cast and then hammered into flat sheets. These sheets were cut with shears and then struck between dies. Later, the screw press was introduced to replace manual hammering. In 1553, an engineer named Aubin Olivier introduced screw presses to strike coins. These machines used a screw to create immense downward pressure. Operating these presses was physically demanding work. In some cases, up to 12 men would rotate every fifteen minutes to turn the arms of the screw. Eventually, these machines were powered by horses, mules, or even water-power to make the process more efficient.

The Industrial Revolution brought the most significant changes to minting through steam power. In 1788, the industrialist Matthew Boulton established a mint in Birmingham, England. He invented a steam-driven screw press that used atmospheric pressure and a piston.

Each of his eight steam-driven presses could strike between 70 and 84 coins every minute. This mass production allowed for standardized dimensions and uniform weight. Such precision made it nearly impossible for counterfeiters to create convincing fake coins. Boulton also used high-technology designs, such as raised rims and sunken letters, to prevent fraud. His work produced the first truly modern coins, which were beautifully polished and perfectly round.

Following Boulton's innovations, further mechanical advancements emerged in the 19th century. Between 1817 and 1830, the German engineer Dietrich Uhlhorn invented the Presse Monétaire. This was a level coin press known as the Uhlhorn Press. It used a steam-driven knuckle-lever mechanism that became famous worldwide. By 1840, over 500 of these presses had been sold. This technology helped move the industry away from the older screw press models. By the early 20th century, mints began using electrical power to drive the metal rolls. This allowed each pair of rolls to be driven independently, which removed the need for heavy, complicated shafting systems.

Today, many notable mints continue these traditions across the globe. The Austrian Mint was established in 1397 and is famous for its gold bullion. The Casa de Moneda de México is the oldest mint in the Americas, dating back to 1535. In the United States, the Philadelphia Mint and the San Francisco Mint are major facilities.
