Before he studied the stars, he was a builder. He moved to Vienna in 1896 to study civil engineering. He graduated from the TU Wien in 1902. Later, he earned his PhD on December 3, 1904. He worked for a firm in Vienna to design many structures. He built dams, bridges, and aqueducts using reinforced concrete. He even invented a new way to build ceilings. This system was called the "Milankovitch-Kreutz" system.

He moved to the Kingdom of Serbia and was granted citizenship in 1910. He eventually rose to high academic positions, serving as the director of the Belgrade Observatory and as vice-president of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Milanković's interest in cosmic climatology began in earnest around 1912. He noticed that much of the meteorology of his time relied on collecting numerical data without enough physics or advanced mathematics. He wanted to solve the "mystery ice age" by looking at the stars. While other scientists like John Herschel and Louis Agassiz had considered astronomical links to climate, they had not established the specific root causes. Milanković studied the theories of earlier thinkers like Joseph Adhemar and James Croll to build his own mathematical models. He sought to find a consistent way to connect the movements of the planets to the changes in Earth's temperature.

His legacy is found in both the structures we walk upon and our understanding of the cosmos. He lived a life that spanned from the practical details of mixing and compacting concrete to the vast calculations of planetary orbits. His ability to apply mathematical analysis to both civil engineering and planetary science allowed him to see patterns that others missed. Today, his name is synonymous with the long-term cycles that govern our planet's climate.
