This instrument was installed on the ESO 3.6 m Telescope in Chile by 2003. HARPS increased measurement accuracy to just 1 meter per second. This allowed for even more precise discoveries of exoplanets.
Mayor's journey in science began with a strong educational foundation. He earned an MS degree in Physics from the University of Lausanne in 1966. In 1971, he completed his PhD in Astronomy at the Geneva Observatory. He spent time as a researcher at the University of Cambridge in 1971. He also spent sabbatical semesters at the European Southern Observatory in Chile and the University of Hawaiʻi. From 1971 to 1984, he was a research associate at the Observatory of Geneva. He became an associate professor in 1984 and a full professor in 1988. He served as the director of the Observatory of Geneva from 1998 to 2004.
In July 1995, Mayor and Queloz achieved a historic breakthrough. They confirmed the existence of 51 Pegasi b, an exoplanet orbiting the star 51 Pegasi. This was the first planet found orbiting a main-sequence star. This planet is classified as a hot-Jupiter–type planet. This discovery sparked a massive global interest in searching for other worlds. By March 21, 2022, scientists confirmed the 5,000th exoplanet beyond our solar system. Mayor also helped discover Gliese 581c in 2007, the first planet found in a star's habitable zone. In 2009, his team found Gliese 581e, which is the lightest exoplanet detected around a main-sequence star.
Because of his massive contributions, Mayor has received many prestigious awards. He was co-laureate of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics. He also won the 2010 Viktor Ambartsumian International Prize and the 2015 Kyoto Prize. Other honors include the 2005 Shaw Prize in Astronomy and the 2017 Wolf Prize in Physics. He was named a knight of the French Legion d'Honneur in 2004. Even a small asteroid, 125076 Michelmayor, was named in his honor in 2013. These awards recognize his role in advancing astronomical instrumentation and techniques.
