Metanephrops challengeri is a slender species of lobster. 
An adult lobster has a very distinct physical shape. Most individuals grow to be between 13 and 18 centimeters long. Some exceptionally large specimens can reach up to 25 centimeters. They usually weigh about 100 grams. Their bodies feature a smooth carapace, which is the hard shell covering the head and thorax. This shell extends forward into a long, narrow rostrum. The rostrum is a pointed part that is almost as long as the carapace itself. 
The life cycle of this lobster involves several rapid stages. Females produce large, blue eggs that are about 2.5 millimeters in diameter. Because they produce eggs in small numbers, the species has low fecundity. This means they do not produce a huge amount of offspring at once. When the eggs hatch, the young are in the zoea stage. These larvae are only 10.0 to 11.5 millimeters long. They use their pereiopods, or leg-like appendages, to swim through the water. This zoea stage is very short and lasts less than four days. After this, the larvae molt, which means they shed their old shell to grow. They become post-larvae and begin using pleopods, or abdominal appendages, to swim. Eventually, they molt again to reach their full adult form.
Scientists have a long history of studying these creatures. The Challenger expedition first collected specimens between 1872 and 1876. These were found in deep sediment on the Challenger Plateau. At first, researchers did not realize they were a unique species. They were grouped with a similar lobster called Nephrops thomsoni. In 1914, a scientist named Heinrich Balss identified them as a separate species. He used two female specimens from the original expedition to define them. 
This lobster plays a massive role in the New Zealand economy. Commercial fishing for scampi has been active since the 1980s. Between 1988 and 1991, the catch grew from 55,000 kg to 500,000 kg. Now, trawlers catch about 1,000,000 kg every year. Most of this catch is exported to other countries. The fishing happens in four main areas on the submerged continent of Zealandia.
There are many interesting facts about how this species lives. M. challengeri is considered to have a very primitive morphology. This means its body shape is very similar to ancient ancestors. It even has fewer new features than the fossil species M. rossensis. These lobsters live in burrows within cohesive sediments. They stay at depths between 140 and 640 meters. 
We must also consider the conservation of these animals and their home. The species is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. This is partly due to the rules set by the Quota Management System. However, some data suggests the population might be declining. Some estimates suggest there are 28 million lobsters in the ocean. Other surveys suggest there may only be 2 to 11 million.
