The Sandanski Formation consists of grey and white sandstones that are between 830 and 1,550 meters deep. These were formed during the Miocene epoch, roughly 11 to 7 million years ago. Above this lies the Kalimantsi Formation, which is 600 meters deep. This formation has a lower sandstone layer and an upper conglomerate layer. 
To understand the history of this landscape, we must look back millions of years. Between 5 and 3 million years ago, the graben valley was actually a large lake. The sediments that now form the pyramids were deposited during this time. The lower Neogene layer is over 100 meters deep and contains grey to yellowish sands and gravels. These are mostly made of quartz grains and clay strata. The Quaternary layer above it is also 100 meters deep. This layer is composed of reddish conglomerate. The distinct red color comes from iron hydroxides produced by the decomposition of minerals. 
The environment surrounding the pyramids is incredibly diverse and lush. The area is heavily influenced by a Mediterranean climate, which supports a wide variety of habitats. Much of the site consists of pasture-ground, but there are also many deciduous forests. Common trees include the Oriental hornbeam, which is the most predominant species. You can also find various types of oak, such as the Hungarian oak and the pubescent oak. Other plants include Mediterranean shrubs like the prickly juniper and the green olive tree. This rich vegetation provides a home for many different living things.
Wildlife is a major part of the Melnik Earth Pyramids' significance. The site is recognized as a location of ornithologic importance because 113 bird species have been identified there. Five specific species have high conservation value for the Mediterranean biome. These include the black-headed bunting and the olive-tree warbler. The area also hosts some of the most important populations of the calandra lark in the entire European Union. Other notable birds include the European honey buzzard and the red-backed shrike. Even traditional vine growing methods in the area help support species like the ortolan bunting.
Today, the pyramids serve as a major destination for international tourism. Visitors come to see the natural landscape and the nearby cultural sites. The town of Melnik is an architectural reserve known for its national revival houses and medieval ruins. The area is also famous for red wine production in cellars dug directly into the sandstone. Nearby, the Rozhen Monastery stands as a significant historical site. It was established in the early 13th century during the Second Bulgarian Empire. The pyramids, the town, and the monastery all connect the geological past to the living culture of Bulgaria.
