Some researchers debate if these are truly distinct species or if they belong to other turtle groups. Fossil remains also suggest relatives lived in Fiji and across various parts of Australia.

The history of discovering Meiolania is complex and filled with scientific debate. In the late 19th century, Richard Owen first described the remains. Interestingly, Owen initially identified the fossils as a type of lizard. He believed they were related to the giant squamate Megalania. He even named the genus after that lizard. However, other researchers like Thomas Henry Huxley argued they were turtles. Huxley proposed a new name, Ceratochelys sthenurus, for the animal. Later, George Albert Boulenger suggested they were side-necked turtles, known as Pleurodira. Eventually, scientists agreed that the name Meiolania took precedence.

Many different people contributed to our knowledge of these turtles over many decades. Early collectors included John Foulis and Robert D. FitzGerald on Lord Howe Island. Geologist H. Wilkinson also collected significant remains in 1882. Later, researcher Charles Anderson finished work started by Robert Etheridge, Junior. He was the first to map where Meiolania lived on Lord Howe Island. William Nichols, a local guide, doubled the number of known specimens.

His work helped scientists realize Meiolania was not a sea turtle. More recent work by Eugene S. Gaffney has provided deep expertise on the genus.

Significant fossil finds have shaped our understanding of their lifestyle. In 1959, a nearly complete skeleton was found at Ned's Beach. This discovery included fossil eggs and a complete skeleton found in a pool.

This helped scientists understand their reproductive habits. Other fossils show adaptations to keep sand out of the nasal cavity. This suggests they lived in arid regions or on sandy beaches. Some researchers even found a large carapace on Old Settlement Beach in 1977. These specific details help paint a picture of a very hardy animal.

The reasons for the extinction of Meiolania remain a subject of study. Scientists do not fully understand how they dispersed across the region. One hypothesis suggests they moved across the submerged continent of Zealandia.
