Megalonyx had a very wide distribution across the continent. It had the widest range of any North American ground sloth. Its territory included most of the contiguous United States. Remains have been found as far south as central Mexico. During warm interglacial periods, they even lived as far north as Alaska and the Yukon. Some fossils were found in New York and even in the Rocky Mountains. One specimen was found at an elevation of 2,900 meters. This shows they could live in many different habitats, including spruce-dominated forests.

Eventually, Megalonyx jeffersonii became extinct during the end-Pleistocene extinction event. This was part of a larger event called the Quaternary extinction. During this time, all mainland ground sloths and most large American mammals disappeared. The youngest confirmed radiocarbon date for a specimen is from Ohio, around 13,000 years ago.
