Many living things call Maui home.

Maui is a major island within the Hawaiian archipelago.

The island's unique shape comes from its volcanic origins. Maui is a "volcanic doublet." This means it formed from two shield volcanoes that overlapped. These volcanoes were created by the Hawaii hotspot. This hotspot caused magma to rise through the Earth's crust. The magma erupted as basalt, which is a dark, iron-rich rock. Over millions of years, these fluid lava flows built up the land. The older volcano is in the northwest. It has eroded significantly to form the West Maui Mountains. The highest peak there is Puʻu Kukui. The younger volcano is in the southeast. This is the massive Haleakalā.
A narrow isthmus connects these two volcanic masses. This strip of land is about six miles wide. It was formed by sandy erosional deposits. This feature gives Maui its nickname, the "Valley Isle."

Native Hawaiian tradition provides a deep history for the island. The name Maui is linked to the navigator Hawaiiloa. He is credited with discovering the Hawaiian Islands. Tradition says he named the island after his son. His son was named after the demigod Māui. Before this, the island was known as Ihikapalaumaewa. Maui was also part of a larger landmass called Maui Nui. This unit included Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, and Molokaʻi. During periods of lower sea levels, these islands were connected. This occurred as recently as 200,000 years ago.
The climate on Maui is tropical and uniform in temperature. It features a two-season year. The weather is heavily influenced by trade winds from the northeast. These winds create various microclimates across the island. Windward areas, like the North Shore, receive much more rain. These areas are often cloudy and lush.

Maui's economy is strongly tied to its natural environment. The tourism industry is very significant. In 2022, nearly three million visitors came to the island. A 2023 report showed that tourism accounts for nearly 40% of the Maui County economy. People visit for the many beaches and resorts. Popular spots include Kāanapali, Kapalua, and Kihei. Travelers also visit the ʻĪao Valley and Haleakalā National Park. However, the island faces challenges. Lāhainā was mostly destroyed by fire in 2023.
Marine life is a vital part of the island's ecology. Maui is a major center for humpback whale watching. These whales migrate from Alaskan waters each autumn. They arrive in the warm Auau Channel to mate and give birth. They stay from November through April. There are an estimated 21,000 to 26,000 humpbacks in the North Pacific. Their population is growing at about 7% per year.
