Education for a mathematician is a rigorous process of specialization. Students typically cover a broad range of topics during their undergraduate studies. At the graduate level, they choose a specific area to master. Many programs require a qualifying exam to test both the depth and breadth of a student's understanding. Those who pass are permitted to work on a doctoral dissertation. While there is no Nobel Prize specifically for mathematics, many mathematicians win Nobel Prizes in other fields like physics or economics.
