Maseru is the capital and largest city of Lesotho.
The name Maseru comes from a Sesotho word. It means "red sandstones."
Maseru's history began in 1869. The British established the area as a small police camp. This occurred after the Free State–Basotho Wars ended. At that time, the region became a British protectorate. The city was located west of Thaba Bosiu. That site was the stronghold of King Moshoeshoe I. Thaba Bosiu had been the previous de facto capital. A busy market town soon grew around the new police camp. Maseru served as the administrative capital from 1869 to 1871. Later, the administration moved to the Cape Colony.
Conflict changed the city during the late 1800s. Between 1871 and 1884, Basutoland was treated like annexed territory. This caused great frustration for the Basotho people. It led to the Gun War in 1881. During this war, many buildings in Maseru were burned. In 1884, the status of Basutoland changed to a Crown colony. Maseru was then named the capital once again. When the country achieved independence in 1966, it became the Kingdom of Lesotho. Maseru retained its status as the national capital.
The city has seen massive growth since independence.

Sports and religion are important parts of city life. The Setsoto Stadium is the national stadium. It can hold between 20,000 and 25,000 people. It is used for athletics and football matches. Many professional football teams live in Maseru. In fact, 12 of the 16 teams in the Lesotho Premier League are based here. The city also hosts many places of worship. These include Christian churches and Muslim mosques. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Maseru includes the Our Lady of Victories Cathedral.
