His life spanned a period of intense conflict known as The Troubles. He later transitioned from paramilitary activity to high-level politics. He became a statesman for the Sinn Féin party. McGuinness played a vital role in building a peaceful government for Northern Ireland.
McGuinness began his involvement with republican groups in the late 1960s. He originally joined the Official IRA. Soon after, he switched to the Provisional IRA. By the start of 1972, he was the second-in-command of the IRA in the city of Derry. This was the same year as the Bloody Sunday event. During a civil rights march on January 30, 1972, thirteen civilians were killed by British soldiers. A fourteenth person died months later. A later inquiry, the Saville Inquiry, found that McGuinness was engaged in paramilitary activity that day. However, the inquiry found no evidence that his actions justified the soldiers opening fire.
His early years were marked by legal challenges and prison time. In 1973, he was convicted by the Special Criminal Court in the Republic of Ireland. He was arrested near a car containing explosives and nearly 5,000 rounds of ammunition. He was sentenced to six months in prison. He did not hide his membership in the IRA during his trial. He stated he was a member of Óglaigh na hÉireann and was proud of it. After being released, he became a prominent figure in Sinn Féin. This was the political wing of the republican movement.
In the 1980s and 1990s, McGuinness moved toward the political process. He was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1982. He also became the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Ulster in 1997.
