Luther's journey began with a lot of studying. He was born in Eisleben to Hans and Margarethe Luther. His father wanted him to be a lawyer. Luther went to many Latin schools to learn. He even went to the University of Erfurt in 1501. At first, he studied law just like his father hoped. However, he soon felt drawn to philosophy and theology instead.

One famous story explains why Luther became a monk. While traveling on a horse in 1505, a thunderstorm hit. A lightning bolt struck very close to him. Luther was so scared of death that he made a vow. He promised to become a monk to find safety with God. He joined the Augustinian order at a monastery in Erfurt. He spent many hours praying and fasting there.

Luther's early life was shaped by his education and his father's ambitions. Born in Eisleben, he was the eldest son of Hans and Margarethe Luther.

His father, a mining official, wanted Martin to become a lawyer. Luther attended several Latin schools to study the trivium, which includes grammar, logic, and rhetoric. In 1501, he entered the University of Erfurt. Although he initially enrolled in law, he soon turned toward philosophy and theology. He found that reason alone could not provide spiritual assurance. He believed that human beings could only know God through divine revelation found in scripture.

A dramatic event in 1505 changed his career path forever. While riding a horse during a thunderstorm, a lightning bolt struck near him. Terrified by the prospect of death and divine judgment, Luther vowed to become a monk.

He joined the Augustinian order at the Black Cloister in Erfurt on July 17, 1505. As a friar, he practiced intense fasting, prayer, and frequent confession. However, he described this period as one of deep spiritual despair. He felt he could not find peace with God through these strict religious acts. His superior eventually encouraged him to pursue an academic career to distract him from this introspection.

Luther eventually became a professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg.

Between 1510 and 1520, he lectured extensively on the Psalms and various books of the New Testament. This deep study led him to challenge the existing practices of the Roman Catholic Church. He was particularly troubled by the sale of indulgences. These were payments made to the Church to receive the remission of temporal punishment for sins. In 1517, he authored the Ninety-five Theses to initiate a debate on these practices. This act is often cited as the beginning of the Reformation. His refusal to retract his writings led Pope Leo X to excommunicate him in 1521.

At the heart of Luther's theology was the doctrine of justification. He taught that justification is the act of God declaring a sinner righteous. Luther argued that this is received as a free gift of God's grace through faith alone. He called this "monergism," the idea that salvation is entirely the work of God. This stood in contrast to "synergism," the belief that humans cooperate with God's grace. He believed that good works were not a way to earn salvation, but were the natural result of living faith. He also rejected sacerdotalism, the idea that a priesthood is a necessary intermediary between God and people. Instead, he taught that all baptized Christians belong to a holy priesthood.

Luther's influence extended far beyond the walls of the church. He translated the Bible into the German language, making it accessible to the laity.

This translation helped standardize the German language and influenced future works like the Tyndale Bible. He was also a prolific hymnwriter, which changed how people sang in Protestant services. His marriage to Katharina von Bora, a former nun, established a new model for clerical marriage. However, his legacy includes much darker elements. In his later years, he wrote books expressing intense antisemitism.

Historians note that his harsh rhetoric against Jewish people and other groups had long-lasting, negative social impacts.

The impact of Luther's life can be seen in the modern religious map. His teachings led to the creation of various Protestant denominations. Many people today identify as Lutherans, though Luther himself preferred the terms Christian or Evangelical. The movement he started broke the religious monopoly of the Roman Catholic Church in many parts of Europe. His emphasis on individual faith and the authority of the Bible shifted the focus of Western thought. His life remains a complex study of intense devotion, intellectual revolution, and significant social change.
