Maoism is a specific set of political ideas.
How Maoism works is different from other systems. Traditional Marxism often focused on workers in big cities. Mao looked at the millions of poor peasants instead. He called these people the "popular masses." He believed they were a powerful force for change. Mao said peasants were like a clean sheet of paper. This meant they could be shaped by new, beautiful ideas. He believed these groups could lead a revolution together. This approach helped adapt global ideas to the Chinese setting.
This way of thinking grew through several different stages.
Many important events helped create these ideas. In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles caused great anger in China. This led to the May Fourth Movement in Beijing. Many students protested against foreign control of Chinese lands. At the same time, the Russian Revolution caught people's attention. These events helped young thinkers reject old traditions. Mao also spent time in Yan'an between 1935 and 1947. It was there that he established his own independent ideas.
Today, we can see how these ideas changed history.
Maoism, officially known as Mao Zedong Thought, is a specific variety of Marxism–Leninism.
The mechanism of Maoism differs significantly from traditional Marxism–Leninism. In traditional Marxism, the urban working class, or proletariat, leads the revolution. This happens because of tensions within the capitalist mode of production. However, Maoism identifies the peasantry as the primary revolutionary force. He viewed the millions of poor peasants as the "popular masses." Mao described peasants as a "clean sheet of paper" that could be written upon with new ideas.
Mao's intellectual development followed five distinct stages. His initial Marxist period lasted from 1920 to 1926. During this time, he focused on the need for people to overthrow their rulers. The formative period occurred between 1927 and 1935. In his mature Maoist period from 1935 to 1940, he produced his most significant work. He wrote the pamphlet "Strategic Problems of China's Revolutionary War" in December 1936. This period saw the "Sinicization of Marxism," which means adapting it to China. The Civil War period from 1940 to 1949 focused heavily on practice. Finally, the post-1949 period involved revising theory to support socialist construction.
Several historical events shaped these ideas. At the turn of the 20th century, Chinese intellectuals were driven by iconoclasm and nationalism. Iconoclasm is the rejection of established traditions, such as Confucianism. The New Culture Movement, occurring between 1915 and 1919, encouraged this destruction of old values. The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 also caused deep resentment. It transferred German-held lands in Shandong to Japan without consulting China. This led to the May Fourth Movement, where 3,000 students protested in Beijing. These moments helped create a fierce nationalist fervor in the Chinese intelligentsia.
The Yan'an period, from November 1935 to March 1947, was also vital. During this time, the Chinese Communist Party was headquartered in the Yan'an Soviet in Shaanxi. Mao used this time to establish himself as a major theoretician. He developed the philosophical base of the party through various dialectical treatises. This period allowed the party to gain ideological independence from Moscow.
Maoism held immense significance for global politics for decades. From the 1950s until the late 1970s, it was the official ideology of the Chinese Communist Party. It also influenced various Maoist revolutionary movements around the world. In the 1960s, a major Sino-Soviet split occurred. This was a disagreement between China and the Soviet Union. Both nations claimed to be the true successors to Joseph Stalin.
Today, the legacy of Maoism is connected to many broader historical shifts. In the late 1970s, Deng Xiaoping introduced the "reform and opening up" policy. This marked a change in China's political and economic direction.
