He is widely considered the "ace-of-aces" of the war. This title refers to his incredible success in aerial combat. He was officially credited with 80 air combat victories. Because of his nobility, he held the title of Freiherr, which translates to Baron. He became globally famous under the nickname "the Red Baron." This name came from his choice to paint his aircraft bright scarlet.

Richthofen was born on May 2, 1892, in Kleinburg, near Breslau.

He grew up in a prominent Prussian aristocratic family. His father was Major Albrecht Philipp Karl Julius Freiherr von Richthofen. As a young man, Manfred enjoyed riding horses and hunting wild animals like elk and deer. He also excelled at gymnastics, specifically on the parallel bars. After completing military school, he joined an Uhlan cavalry unit. An Uhlan is a type of cavalry soldier. At the start of World War I, he served as a cavalry reconnaissance officer. This role involved watching enemy movements on the Eastern and Western Fronts.

However, the nature of the war changed how soldiers fought. The development of trench warfare made traditional cavalry operations inefficient. Richthofen's regiment was eventually dismounted to serve as dispatch runners and telephone operators. He felt bored and disappointed by these duties. He famously stated in an application that he did not join the war to collect cheese and eggs. He wanted to participate in direct combat. In May 1915, his request to join the Imperial German Army Air Service was granted. He began his training as an aerial observer at Großenhain.

He later flew reconnaissance missions over the Eastern Front.

Richthofen's journey to becoming a pilot was not easy. After a meeting with the famous pilot Oswald Boelcke, he began flight training in October 1915. His early attempts at flying were quite difficult. He actually crashed during his very first flight at the controls. Despite this poor start, he became highly skilled and learned to master his aircraft. In August 1916, Boelcke selected him to join Jasta 2, which was one of the first German fighter squadrons. Richthofen became a master tactician rather than just a flashy pilot. He followed the "Dicta Boelcke," a set of rules for successful aerial combat. He preferred to dive from above, using the sun to hide his approach.

As his success grew, Richthofen developed unique traditions. After every confirmed victory, he ordered a silver cup from a jeweler in Berlin. The cups were engraved with the date and the type of enemy aircraft. He did this for 60 victories until the supply of silver in Germany ran low due to blockades. He refused to use base metals for his trophies. In January 1917, he received the Pour le Mérite. This was Germany's highest military honor and was often called "The Blue Max."

During his career, he faced many famous adversaries, including the British ace Major Lanoe Hawker VC. Richthofen's ability to lead and train other elite pilots made him a vital asset to the German military.

Richthofen eventually rose to command a large fighter wing called Jagdgeschwader I. This unit was famously known as "The Flying Circus" or "Richthofen's Circus." This nickname described how the unit moved across different battle areas. They traveled with their aircraft loaded onto railroad flatcars. They often set up camp using tents on improvised airfields.

While he is most often associated with the red Fokker Dr.I triplane, he actually only scored 19 of his 80 victories in that specific model. He also flew several other aircraft, including the Albatros D.III and the Albatros D.V. He even helped suggest improvements for the development of the Fokker D.VII fighter.

His life ended during the war on April 21, 1918. He was shot down and killed over France near Vaux-sur-Somme.
