Nearly half the population is under 15 years old. There are 13 official languages used in the country. Bambara is the language most people speak.

Mali has a very long history of human habitation. Rock art in the Sahara suggests people lived there since 10,000 BC. Early ceramics were discovered at a site called Ounjougou. These date to about 9,400 BC. This site is believed to be an instance of independent pottery invention. Farming began by 5000 BC. People used iron by around 500 BC. Early cities like Dia and Djenne-Djenno also developed along the Niger River.

The region was once home to three powerful West African empires. These were the Ghana, Mali, and Songhai empires. They controlled the trans-Saharan trade. This trade involved gold, salt, and other goods. The Mali Empire reached its peak in the 14th century. Its emperor, Mansa Musa, was believed to be one of the wealthiest people in history. The city of Timbuktu became a world center for Islamic culture and education.

The Songhai Empire eventually absorbed the Mali Empire in 1468. Later, a Saadian army defeated the Songhai in 1591. This event marked the end of the region's role as a major trading crossroads. During the late 19th century, France took control of the area. It became known as French Sudan. Mali finally gained independence in 1960. It was originally part of the Mali Federation with Senegal. After Senegal withdrew, the Republic of Mali was established.

Today, Mali has a population of about 23.29 million people. Nearly 47.19% of the population is under the age of 15. The capital and largest city is Bamako. There are 13 official languages in the country. Bambara is the most commonly spoken language.

This conflict was complicated by a military coup in March 2012. In 2020 and 2021, two more coups occurred. A military junta led by Colonel Assimi Goïta has since ruled. In 2025, a blockade on fuel imports caused economic disruption in southern cities.
