A row of mountains runs down the middle. We call these the Titiwangsa Mountains. They act like a backbone for the land. The peninsula is also near the sea. The Strait of Malacca sits between the land and Sumatra. The Straits of Johor separate the land from Singapore.

The land is very green and wet. It has many tropical forests. Some forests have trees that stay green all year. Other forests have trees that lose leaves in some seasons. These woods are home to many animals. You might see an Asian elephant or a tiger. You might also see a sun bear or a tapir.

Nature shapes the land in many interesting ways. The Titiwangsa Mountains run down the middle of the peninsula. These mountains act like a backbone for the whole area. They are part of a larger system called the Tenasserim Hills. The peninsula has a very narrow point called the Kra Isthmus. To the west, the Strait of Malacca separates the land from Sumatra. To the south, the Straits of Johor separate the coast from Singapore.

People have written about this place for a very long time. The Malay name for the land is Tanah Melayu. This name means "the Malay land." Old texts from the 17th century use this name. In the year 1365, a manuscript called the Negarakertagama called it Hujung Medini. Ancient Indian texts also mention a place called Malayadvipa. Travelers like Marco Polo and the geographer al-Idrisi wrote about the area too.

Today, the peninsula is divided into many states and provinces. In Malaysia, there are states like Johor and Perak. Each state has its own capital city and leaders. For example, the capital of Johor is Johor Bahru. In Thailand, there are many southern provinces like Phuket and Krabi. The peninsula is a place where many different cultures and lands meet. It remains a very important part of the world.

The Malay Peninsula is a significant landmass located in Mainland Southeast Asia.

It stretches approximately from north to south. The southern terminus of the peninsula is Tanjung Piai. This specific location marks the southernmost point of the Asian continental mainland. The peninsula encompasses several distinct political territories. It includes Peninsular Malaysia and Southern Thailand. It also includes the southernmost tip of Myanmar, known as Kawthaung. The island nation of Singapore maintains close historical and cultural ties to this region.

Physical geography defines the structure of the peninsula. The Titiwangsa Mountains serve as the central backbone of the landmass. These mountains are part of the larger Tenasserim Hills system. This system is the southernmost section of a central cordillera. This cordillera extends from Tibet through the Kra Isthmus. The Kra Isthmus represents the narrowest point of the peninsula. Water bodies surround the land on multiple sides. The Strait of Malacca separates the peninsula from the Indonesian island of Sumatra. To the south, the Straits of Johor separate the coast from Singapore.

Historical records provide many different names for this region. The Malay term Tanah Melayu means "the Malay land." This term appears in Malay texts dating back to the early 17th century. The Hikayat Hang Tuah, a classic tale, uses this name to describe areas under Malaccan dominance. In the 1365 Negarakertagama manuscript, the area is called Hujung Medini. A Portuguese apothecary named Tomé Pires used the term Terra de Tana Malaio in the early 16th century. He used this to describe the southeastern part of Sumatra where the sultan of Malacca lived in exile.

Ancient and medieval scholars also documented the peninsula. The Indian Vayu Purana mentions Malayadvipa, which means "mountain-insular continent." This may refer to the Malay Peninsula. An inscription at the Brihadeeswarar Temple mentions a kingdom called Malaiur. This kingdom was said to have a strong mountain for a rampart. Ptolemy's Geographia calls a region the Golden Chersonese or Maleu-kolon. This name likely comes from the Sanskrit terms malayakolam or malaikurram. Arab geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi called the area Malai in his Tabula Rogeriana. He described it as a long island bordering the Qmer.

The ecology of the peninsula is characterized by tropical moist broadleaf forests. These forests are divided into several distinct types based on elevation and rainfall. Lowland forests are dominated by dipterocarp trees. Montane forests exist at higher elevations. These high-altitude forests contain evergreen trees from the beech, myrtle, and laurel families. There are also tropical conifers in these regions. The peninsula contains three specific terrestrial ecoregions in Malaysia. These include montane rain forests above 1,000 meters, lowland rain forests, and peat swamp forests. The peat swamps are distinctive waterlogged forests found in the lowlands.

Biodiversity in these forests is incredibly high. The peninsula supports thousands of plant and animal species. Many large mammals are currently endangered in the region. These include the Asian elephant, gaur, and tiger. Other notable animals are the sun bear, Malayan tapir, and clouded leopard. The siamang is also found here. The Sumatran rhinoceros once lived in these forests. However, the last rhinoceroses in Malaysia died in 2019. Now, the few remaining members of that species survive only in Sumatra. Extensive mangrove forests also line both the eastern and western coasts.

Political organization on the peninsula is complex. In Malaysia, the peninsula is divided into several states. Each state has its own capital and leadership. For instance, Johor has its capital at Johor Bahru. Perak has its capital at Ipoh. Selangor contains two federal territories, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. In Thailand, the southern region consists of many provinces. These include Phuket, Krabi, and Songkhla. The Kangar-Pattani floristic boundary marks a biological division in the south. This boundary separates the Indochina region from Sundaland and Malesia. This division is seen in the types of trees that grow in each area.
