The Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens is a possible inventor. He made sketches of a lantern in 1659. He actually felt the invention was too frivolous. He even asked his brother to sabotage a lantern! Another man named Walgensten was a famous demonstrator. He traveled to many cities like Paris and Rome. He is credited with using the name "laterna magica." Some people believe a tradition of making lanterns began in southern Germany. An instrument maker named Johann Franz Griendel worked in Nürnberg in 1671.

There was also a separate tradition of lantern making in southern Germany. This tradition featured lanterns with horizontal cylindrical bodies. An instrument maker named Johann Franz Griendel arrived in Nürnberg in 1671. Some suggest that an earlier maker, Johann Wiesel, may have inspired this development. Wiesel made a ship's lantern around 1640 that shared many design features with later magic lanterns. These included a concave mirror and a biconvex lens. These early German designs helped establish the magic lantern as a major center of production.

In the 17th century, users relied on candles or oil lamps. These sources were very inefficient and produced very dim images. The invention of the Argand lamp in the 1790s helped increase brightness. In the 1820s, the invention of limelight provided much more intense light, emitting about 6,000 to 8,000 lumens.
