Magellanic spirals are often found near much larger spiral galaxies. This proximity is a common trait for many dwarf galaxies. For example, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) are located near the Milky Way. 
There are many notable examples of these galaxies across the sky. The barred SBm group includes the LMC, the SMC, NGC 1311, and NGC 4618. Other members of this group include NGC 4236, NGC 55, NGC 4214, NGC 3109, and IC 4710. 


Understanding Magellanic spirals helps scientists study galaxy morphology, which is the study of galaxy shapes. These galaxies are often described as asymmetric or disrupted. This suggests they may not be perfectly stable or even in shape. Some researchers also classify them as dSm galaxies. This term is used depending on whether a scientist views them as dwarf spirals or dwarf irregulars.
