He lived in Baarn from 1941 until 1970. He received a Knighthood in 1955 for his work. He passed away in 1972 at the age of 73.

Escher moved beyond simple geometric shapes to create tessellations using recognizable animals. For example, in his 1939 study of reptiles, he used a hexagonal grid. In this work, the heads, legs, and tails of red, green, and white reptiles interlock exactly. This technique allowed him to explore how different forms could occupy the same space. He later used these ideas in his famous 1943 lithograph, "Reptiles." 
Escher’s fascination with these patterns was triggered by specific historical sites. During his travels in 1922, he visited many cities in Italy and Spain. In 1936, he returned to Spain to study the Alhambra and the Mezquita of Cordoba. The Alhambra features decorative designs based on geometrical symmetries. These patterns are found in colored tiles and sculpted walls. Escher spent days making detailed drawings of these mosaic patterns. These study journeys were his last; after 1937, he created all his work within his own studio. 
His life was marked by several moves across Europe due to personal and political reasons. He was born in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, on June 17, 1898. In 1966, his work gained widespread popularity after being featured in the "Mathematical Games" column of Scientific American. He also served as a major inspiration for Douglas Hofstadter’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, "Gödel, Escher, Bach." His work continues to bridge the gap between the beauty of art and the logic of mathematics.
