Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first published the name Lycopodium in 1753. He originally placed them in a group called Musci, which means mosses. Today, experts use different ways to group them. The Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group (PPG I) classification from 2016 says Lycopodium is one of many genera. In this view, there are between 9 and 15 species in this specific group. Other scientists say the genus includes about 40 different species.

People have found many uses for the spores of these plants. The spores can be gathered to make a fine lycopodium powder. In traditional Austrian medicine, people used the herb as a tea. They also used it as a compress for skin or kidney issues. In the United States, the government used the powder in chemical warfare tests called Operation Dew. This is the sexual phase of the life cycle. The prothallium bears both male and female organs. The male organs are called antheridia. The female organs are called archegonia. Taxonomy, or the science of classifying life, shows different views of Lycopodium. Carl Linnaeus first published the genus in 1753. He originally placed it in the Musci group, which refers to mosses. He included species like Lycopodium selaginoides, though that is now in the genus Selaginella. Scientists use different ways to define the genus today. Some classifications consider Lycopodium to be the only genus in its family. This would mean it includes all species in the Lycopodiaceae family.

Other scientists use a broader definition called Lycopodium sensu lato. In this view, the genus contains about 40 species. However, the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group (PPG I) uses a narrower definition. In the 2016 PPG I classification, Lycopodium is one of nine genera in the subfamily Lycopodioideae. This specific group contains between 9 and 15 species. One example is Lycopodium clavatum, also known as stag's-horn clubmoss. This species is considered subcosmopolitan, meaning it is found in many parts of the world. Other species live in specific places, like Lycopodium japonicum in eastern Asia.
