Lunokhod 1 was a very busy explorer. It was only meant to work for three lunar days. However, it lasted for eleven lunar days. That is about 321 Earth days of work. It traveled a total distance of 10.54 km. The rover took over 20,000 TV images and many panoramas.

This vehicle moved on eight independently powered wheels, with an electric motor located in each wheel hub. To function in a vacuum, engineers used a special fluoride-based lubricant for mechanical parts. The motors were also kept safe inside pressurized containers.

Powering the rover required a clever system to manage the lunar day and night cycles. A solar cell array was mounted on the underside of the rover's lid to collect sunlight. This energy recharged the onboard batteries during the lunar day. When night fell, the rover entered a state of hibernation to protect itself. The lid would close, and a polonium-210 radioisotope heater unit would keep the internal components at a safe operating temperature. This cycle allowed the rover to survive the freezing lunar nights.

The mission began with the launch of the Luna 17 spacecraft on November 10, 1970. After reaching Earth parking orbit, the final rocket stage propelled the craft toward the Moon. The spacecraft performed two course correction maneuvers on November 12 and 14. It entered lunar orbit on November 15, 1970. On November 17, the lander performed a soft landing in the Mare Imbrium, also known as the Sea of Rains.

The rover then descended to the surface using dual ramps from the lander.

Lunokhod 1 was an incredibly durable explorer that far exceeded its original design goals. It was initially intended to operate for only three lunar days, or about three Earth months. Instead, it functioned for eleven lunar days, totaling 321 Earth days of operation. During this time, the rover traveled a total distance of 10.54 kilometers. It was a prolific collector of data, returning more than 20,000 TV images and 206 high-resolution panoramas.

The rover also performed 25 lunar soil analyses using its RIFMA x-ray fluorescence spectrometer.

As the rover traversed the landscape, it encountered and passed several small craters. These craters were eventually given unofficial names, which the International Astronomical Union officially approved in 2012. Some of these names include Albert, Leonid, Kolya, Valera, Borya, Gena, Vitya, Kostya, Igor, Slava, Nikolya, and Vasya. The rover used a penetrometer to test the soil at 500 different locations. This helped scientists understand the mechanical properties and density of the lunar ground. Its final stop was near the Leonid crater.

Even though the mission officially ceased in October 1971, Lunokhod 1 remains useful to science today. For many years, its exact location was unknown. However, in 2010, researchers used images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to find the rover and lander.

Scientists used laser ranging to pinpoint its location to within one meter. They discovered that the rover's laser retro-reflector, supplied by France, was returning much more light than expected. This allows the Apollo project to continue using the rover to study the Earth-Moon system with incredible precision.
