Louis went to a school for blind children. At that time, books were hard to use. They had raised letters on thick paper. These letters were slow to read. They were also very heavy. Louis wanted a better way. He was inspired by a code made of dots. He made his own system called braille. 
His system used six raised dots. These dots fit under one finger. This made reading very fast. He even made a way to read music. He used tools like a slate and stylus to make it. This system works for many languages today. It helps people read and write with their sense of touch. Louis became a teacher at his school. He spent his life making his system better.

Braille's journey began in Coupvray, France, where he was born on 4 January 1809.
At the Institute, students initially used the Haüy system to read. This method was designed by Valentin Haüy, a philanthropist who was not blind himself. The system involved embossing heavy paper with raised imprints of Latin letters.
In 1821, Braille discovered a communication system created by Charles Barbier. Barbier’s method used a code of up to twelve dots arranged in two columns. 
To write, Braille utilized a slate and stylus, tools originally donated by Barbier. He improved the process by soldering metal strips across the slate. This created a secure area that kept his lines straight and readable. He also expanded his system to include musical notation. As an accomplished cellist and organist, he wanted a code flexible enough for any instrument. In 1829, he published his first major work, *Method of Writing Words, Music, and Plainsong*. This publication was a milestone in making tactile communication a practical reality.
Braille's technical contributions extended to several specialized methods. He developed a system called decapoint, which used a specialized grill to overlay paper. When combined with a memorized number table, this allowed blind writers to reproduce the standard alphabet. This meant they could write letters that sighted people could also read. He also assisted Pierre-François-Victor Foucault with the Raphigraphe. This device allowed for the rapid creation of letters made from raised points. The Raphigraphe was so successful it was exhibited at the 1855 World's Fair in Paris.
Throughout his adult life, Braille served as a professor at the Institute. He taught subjects such as history, geometry, and algebra.
