He was playing with a tool called an awl while making leather goods. The tool slipped and injured his eye, which led to a bad infection. By the age of five, Louis had lost his sight in both eyes. Even though this was a hard time, he grew up to be a very bright student.

At first, students at his school used a system made by Valentin Haüy. This system used raised letters on heavy paper that people traced with their fingers.

Furthermore, the process was purely artisanal and required copper wire and wet paper. Because the letters were large and complex, students could not easily write for themselves. Braille found this method slow and felt it lacked sufficient depth for true literacy.

In 1821, Braille discovered a communication system created by Charles Barbier. Barbier’s method used a code of up to twelve dots arranged in two columns.

Braille recognized the potential in this tactile approach but saw ways to improve it. He worked to make the system more compact and efficient for the human finger. He reduced the maximum number of dots from twelve down to six. He also discarded the use of dashes, which he found too difficult to read. This smaller cell size allowed a reader to recognize a letter with a single touch.

To write, Braille utilized a slate and stylus, tools originally donated by Barbier. He improved the process by soldering metal strips across the slate. This created a secure area that kept his lines straight and readable. He also expanded his system to include musical notation. As an accomplished cellist and organist, he wanted a code flexible enough for any instrument. In 1829, he published his first major work, *Method of Writing Words, Music, and Plainsong*. This publication was a milestone in making tactile communication a practical reality.

Braille's technical contributions extended to several specialized methods. He developed a system called decapoint, which used a specialized grill to overlay paper. When combined with a memorized number table, this allowed blind writers to reproduce the standard alphabet. This meant they could write letters that sighted people could also read. He also assisted Pierre-François-Victor Foucault with the Raphigraphe. This device allowed for the rapid creation of letters made from raised points. The Raphigraphe was so successful it was exhibited at the 1855 World's Fair in Paris.

Throughout his adult life, Braille served as a professor at the Institute. He taught subjects such as history, geometry, and algebra.
