It serves as a vital source of information for millions of people. Currently, it is the largest newspaper in the Western United States. It also ranks as the sixth-largest newspaper in the entire country. The publication provides news through both printed paper and digital platforms. To maintain its operations, the paper uses a paywall system. This means readers pay for monthly or annual subscriptions to access content. The newspaper also generates revenue through display advertising and sponsored articles.

The history of the paper began on December 4, 1881.

At its start, it was called the Los Angeles Daily Times. Nathan Cole Jr. and Thomas Gardiner directed the original publication. The paper was first printed at the Mirror printing plant. However, the founders could not pay their printing bills. This led to the paper being turned over to the Mirror Company. S. J. Mathes insisted that the publication should continue. In July 1882, Harrison Gray Otis became the editor. He also purchased a one-quarter stake in the company for $6,000. Otis used the paper for civic boosterism to promote the growth of Los Angeles.

During the early 20th century, the paper faced significant conflict. The editorial policy of the paper opposed local labor unions. This tension led to a violent event on October 1, 1910. A bomb struck the newspaper's headquarters, which killed 21 people.

Two union leaders, James and Joseph McNamara, were charged in connection with the bombing. Their attorney, Clarence Darrow, represented them in court. The brothers eventually pleaded guilty to the charges. Following this era, the paper moved to a landmark Art Deco building. This building was known as the Los Angeles Times Building. It occupied a large area known as Times Mirror Square.

Leadership changed hands through several generations of the Chandler family. After Otis died in 1917, his son-in-law Harry Chandler took control. He was followed by his son, Norman Chandler, in 1944. Norman ran the paper during the rapid growth of Los Angeles after World War II. The fourth generation, Otis Chandler, served as publisher from 1960 to 1980. He wanted to give the paper national legitimacy. He modeled the newsroom after prestigious papers like The New York Times. Otis increased the size and pay of the reporting staff. He also moved the paper toward a more centrist editorial stance. Under his leadership, the paper won four Pulitzer Prizes in a single decade.

In the modern era, the newspaper has faced many financial and structural shifts. The Tribune Company of Chicago purchased the Times Mirror Company in 2000. Later, businessman Sam Zell acquired the company. This period led to significant debt and a bankruptcy filing in 2008. The company struggled with declining advertising revenue and high debt loads. In 2018, billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong purchased the paper. The sale price was $500 million. He also assumed $90 million in pension liabilities. Since 2020, the paper's focus has shifted toward Southern California news.

This is a change from its previous national and international focus.

The newspaper has also undergone major physical and organizational changes. In July 2018, the staff moved to a new headquarters in El Segundo. This facility is located near the Los Angeles International Airport. This move took the paper out of its historic downtown Los Angeles location. The staff also moved toward unionization in 2018. They finalized their first union contract on October 16, 2019. However, the paper has also faced staff reductions to manage financial losses. In January 2024, the paper underwent a layoff exceeding 20 percent of its staff. This was done to maintain enough cash for the paper to remain operational.

Despite these challenges, the Los Angeles Times remains a significant journalistic institution. It has won over 40 Pulitzer Prizes since it was founded. This demonstrates a long history of high-quality reporting. As of 2022, the paper had 500,000 online subscribers. This makes it the fifth-largest newspaper in the United States by digital reach. The print circulation stands at 63,500 copies. Looking forward, ownership plans continue to evolve. In July 2025, Patrick Soon-Shiong announced plans to take the paper public. This will happen within a year. The paper continues to struggle for relevance and survival in a changing media landscape.
