To begin the actual printing, the stone must be prepared with water. The water adheres only to the etched, hydrophilic areas. Because the water is attracted to the gum, it makes those sections even more oil-repellant. Then, an oil-based ink is rolled over the surface. This ink is hydrophobic, so it avoids the wet areas. The ink sticks only to the original greasy drawing. Finally, the stone and a sheet of paper are run through a press. The pressure transfers the ink from the stone to the paper. 
History shows how this technology evolved from stone to metal. Alois Senefelder invented lithography in 1796 in the Electorate of Bavaria. He was a German author and actor. Initially, his method was used mostly for musical scores and maps. In 1837, Godefroy Engelmann developed chromolithography in France. This was a new process for multi-color printing. It required a separate stone for every color used. The printer had to keep the images perfectly aligned, a challenge known as register. This method led to the famous poster designs of the period.
Modern commercial printing uses a more advanced version called offset lithography. In this system, the ink is not transferred directly from the plate to the paper. A photographic negative is placed against this emulsion and exposed to ultraviolet light. After development, the emulsion shows a reverse of the negative image. This creates a duplicate of the desired positive image. In recent years, computer-to-plate (CTP) technology has emerged. This allows digital images to be sent directly to a platesetter. This eliminates the need for physical film negatives entirely.
Lithography remains a vital part of our modern world. High-volume lithography is used to produce almost any smooth, mass-produced item. This includes posters, maps, newspapers, and even product packaging. It is the primary technology for high-volume text like books. The transition from heavy limestone to lightweight metal plates changed everything. It allowed the printing industry to move from slow, manual work to continuous, rapid production. Even as technology moves toward digital, the core principle of oil and water repulsion remains essential.
